Movie post, prompted by
dvoid's most recent post about Reign Of Fire (which i saw the day i got back from Brisbane at the beginning of the month), and also some other flickaz i've seen recently...
(will cut them because of spoilers)

Reign of Fire - rike verly much. The CGI & effects were great. I love seeing those 'earth-post-descruction'/post-apocolyptic films. The dragons looked like Draco from
Dragonheart on some seriously messed up drugs. Plus a curse of hell or two. The 'settlers' really look like they are having a hard time, which was great for the setting and mood.
BUT.
The reason i like this so much is because i could see the potential of that story line, and it could have been something much grander and spectacular - and Epic, almost (but without Kevin Costner, please). Was it based on a book? 'Cause its as if the script was missing huge chunks from the middle. We only see very few dragons until the end - and the Alpha Male was seen only briefly. There's a 20 year gap in the middle, and you're left feeling kind of.. cheated. They dont get to the point all that quickly either, so timing could have been worked on.. Like i said - missing script pages, i'm sure...
What i would have liked to have seen:
The first stages of destruction
The global panic, and the attempts to thwart the onslaught
How this guy became the leader of the community
Humans figuring out how to live and what they are having to do without.
More or better references to Quinn being the kid who found the first Dragon/egg. Leads back to the first point.
learning how the dragon population grew so quickly
maybe hearing about what happened in the rest of the world, what went wrong with previous attempts to destroy them
maybe a bit of backstory to Van Zan and his lot.
bit more on the evolution of the dragon - maybe some speculation of where they came from etc.
What happened after the killed the alpha male - and how they were certain that a) it was the only one and b) that they could bring the million other female dragons down aswell...
Sure i can fill in the blanks myself, i guess, but it would have been great to see it all realised on film. It would be about 3 hours long - or more - but hey, aren't all movies these days..? ;) My brother went as far as suggesting a trilogy, as that also seems to be the current craze :p
It was different, held my interest and was a fantastic escape for a few hours. I've spent money on seeing a lot worse...
So yeah, i liked it. Didn't love it but i'd certainly make the effort of seeing it again.
Red Dragon coming soon...
