Okay! Okay, all you people on OKCupid, yes, someday I will actually write a profile. Just not today. Yeesh.

(Note: This is not actually directed at anyone I know. It's all the strangers who keep harassing me. However, if you harass me about it, I'd be happy to yeesh you as well.)

I realize I'm going to sound like a total n00b, but what's the story with OKCupid? I'd never heard of it before your post, and suddenly everyone's talking about it. Is it just that it's free, or is there something more to it that makes it special? I've never seriously done the internet dating thing (I don't have enough time to meet all of the attractive people connected to my real-world social group!) but I'm curious....

Oh man, you n00b. (I have never actually called anybody that. I guess I'm a n00b too.)

OkCupid is unique because the match percentages are based on the questions you answer, which are weighted including your response, your ideal match's response, and how important it is to you. I'm told it's a very interesting algorithm, and certainly has a fairly high success rate as far as "people I might hang out with" being high on my match list. Here's the technical info: http://okcupid.com/static?p=faaaq

Hmm... so have you met any cool people that way that you actually ended up hanging out with?

I'm not much of a "meet people online" kind of person, but I have matched high with people that I already liked and spent time with. So I guess this is mostly theoretical.

I signed up for an account due to nostalgia for SparkMatch, which was around when I was 16 or so and provided me with many interesting penpals when I was still living with my parents and perpetually bored late at night. OKcupid is useful in that (like gmail) it provides browser-based chat and email, which are good for talking to people in other states when (like me) you hate phones and are often online at different times. It has, like its predecessor, provided some fun penpals, though obviously for actual *dating* real life is infinitely better. Meeting people online for dating confuses me as a concept; talking to interesting strangers when it's 3 AM and I can't sleep, on the other hand, seems fairly worthwhile.
