We just had a 5.8 earthquake out here. The epicenter was Chino Hills which is about an hour south east of our house, but my house was shaking pretty good. It was roughly 30 seconds. Shook hard, shook steady and slow, calmed for a second and then gave us another good shake before it finally subsided.
We're okay, just a couple of things fell over, it was more surprising to have a bigger earthquake than anything else. We get little shakers here and there, but this was definitely substantial. The initial reports are that it was felt as far east as Las Vegas and as far south as San Diego. There are currently no emergency reports from those out in Chino Hills, but this is the initial report, that could change. I hope it doesn't of course.
We were long overdue for an earthquake, so I'm pretty relieved that we had one and it wasn't "the big one" you know? Heh... >_> This was pretty much the perfect sized earthquake to go through an earthquake, but have the least amount of damage. Anything smaller wouldn't be big enough and anything bigger would have had bad damage reports.
The last big quake I can remember was the Northridge quake in 1994, and that was a 6.8. There were really heavy damages from that earthquake, especially in the Northridge area and the surrounding areas close to it. It was a long quake, over a minute as I recall, and there was definitely broken stuff in my house. 6.8 isn't 1 x a 5.8 though, it's much greater. The scale for earthquakes goes up A LOT even for just .1, but it's really hard to grasp the scale if you've never experienced a quake.
This will be the topic of conversation for the next couple of days, I'm sure. Especially for all the people that have recently moved to California and just experienced their first big quake.
