It's Where the Planet Geek Passes Through the Nerdy Way
by Vanessa F. /
xstillwaiting The episode starts off with Claire delegating tasks to Phil, since Luke and Hailey waited until that afternoon to say anything about their respective assignments that are due the following day (a project on Van Gogh for Luke, and 40 cupcakes for Hailey). Claire stresses the importance of being hard on the kids and making sure they are focused so that they can get their work done, and she's proven right when Luke thinks that Phil's noise-cancelling headphones mean that nobody can hear him while he is wearing them.
Mitchell has plans to go on a trip with his dad to go watch a meteor shower, something they do every few years. It's one of the few interests that they share so he is really looking forward to it. He gets picked up by his dad and finds Manny in the car, tagging along on his father-son tradition. From the moment that Mitchell gets to the car, Manny constantly takes digs at him. The only reason Manny acted this way was because Jay told him to after Manny told him he was worried that Mitchell would mind that Manny was there with them. He wanted to feel closer to Mitchell as a brother, and Jay told Manny that this is what brothers do. After Mitchell walks away into the woods out of frustration and returns because he was sprayed by a skunk, Jay takes him aside and explains that the reason he brought Manny along was because some kids think he's weird and didn't invite him somewhere, and he thought Mitchell could talk to him.
Mitchell: This is the funny thing about growing up: For years and years, everyone is desperately afraid to be different, in any way. And then suddenly, almost overnight, everybody wants to be different. And that is where we win.
Manny: I was sorta counting on that.
Cameron: On paper, we should be good friends. Look at us. One spicy, curvy diva --
Mitchell: And Gloria.
Cameron spends the evening with Gloria and tries to make amends for accidentally insulting her a few weeks before while he was talking about Mitchell's ivy league friends. "Honestly, I wish that tart would go back to Columbia and take her weird little Brown friend with her." Cue Gloria and Manny walking by behind him. After going to the restaurant of Gloria's choice and eating food that was too spicy for him ("I feel like I ate the sun!"), Gloria tells Cameron that everything is alright between them.
Hey dad, he kind of looks like Uncle Mitchell. If Uncle Mitchell were insane.
Claire was worried about Luke's lack of focus and concentration, but she should have been worried about Phil instead. He went from helping Luke brainstorm to trying to fix Luke's desk chair, to climbing shelves in the garage because he found his missing sunglasses.
Hailey's plan was to let her mom see her screw up making cupcakes so that Claire will jump in and just make them herself. The entire time that Claire is baking and explaining everything, Hailey is ignoring her and thinks that her plan is working. When the cupcakes are finished, Claire throws them all out and tells Hailey that she can make them herself now that she knows how to make them. The episode ends with Hailey leaving for school and thinking that she successfully baked, when in reality her family can't wait to spit the cupcakes out and Luke says his "mouth is asleep like at the dentist."
