Here's the number one songs on my birthday. I erased a bunch...and put my insightful comments in the parentheses.
THE 2000s
2007 ... "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy Tell'em (Whatever)
2005 ... "Gold Digger" by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx (Best line: "But you stick by him and you stay right girl / And when he get on, he leave your ass for a white girl.")
2003 ... "Baby Boy" by Beyoncé featuring Sean Paul (I remember this video with Beyonce all sweaty and gyrating in the sand. I like her. It disturbs me when she gyrates.)
2001 ... "Family Affair" by Mary J. Blige (The invention of a new word: "hatoration." Here, I'll use it in a sentence. I'm feeling rather infuriated lately by your relentless hatoration.)
2000 ... "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera (And now this is stuck in my head.)
THE 1990s (BEST DECADE EVER! Everyone says they love the 80s and the 70s and the 60s. But I think we all know it was the 90s that brought us Mariah. Notice she's on this list twice. I believe she had over 10 number one hits in the 90s. This list is of course on October 30th of every year. You can look it up. If one more of her hits goes #1, she'll have more than the Beatles. How about them apples?)
1999 ... "Smooth" by Santana featuring Rob Thomas (Everybody was so obsessed with this song. And no Carlos Santana makes shoes.)
1997 ... "Something About the Way You Look Tonight/ Candle in the Wind 1997" by Elton John (This was when Princess Diana died. They played this out so baaaaaad. Like after 9/11 when all they played was Enrique Iglesias's Hero. Who decided that Enrique Iglesias would be comforting. I find that mole rather discomforting. But what do I know.)
1996 ... "Macarena [Bayside Boys Mix]" by Los Del Rio (Obviously.)
1995 ... "Fantasy" by Mariah Carey (Oh look, there she is. The remix was even better. *sings* Whatcha gonna do when you get out jail? / I'm gonna do a remix.)
1994 ... "I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men (This song is so effing great. What happened to the Boyz? I miss their matched outfits and perfect harmonies.)
1993 ... "Dreamlover" by Mariah Carey (And there she is again. The big MC puts SAT words in her songs. How do you think I passed that shit? In Dreamlover we have "disillusion.")
1992 ... "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men (Another great one.)
1990 ... "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice (YES! I know all the words to this song. And I'm not ashamed to admit it.)
THE 1980s
1988 ... "Kokomo" by The Beach Boys (remember all the places they listed but no place was as good as Kokomo. I don't even think Kokomo is a real place. It's like Gondor, or Xanadu, or Camelot.)
1987 ... "Bad" by Michael Jackson (I was seven. I was in second grade. I met Magoober. The rest is history.)
1986 ... "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper (A good one.)
1985 ... "Part-Time Lover" by Stevie Wonder (I love Stevie now that I live here. I think it's because my jazz teacher is in her late forties so we listen to a lot of SW in the warm-ups.)
1984 ... "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)" by Billy Ocean (Whatever happened to this guy?)
1983 ... "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton (I just bought this song. It kind of rocks.)
1982 ... "Who Can It Be Now?" by Men at Work (Why couldn't it have been "Down Under"?)
1980 ... "Woman in Love" by Barbra Streisand (Barbra. You know she was gonna be one here.)
thanks to leatherstocking for giving me this idea.
