I posted a quick opinion blurb on the Dylan Dog movie on g+ but that made me want to discuss it a little more at length. So it felt more like a lj thing.
Let me preface this with- I really enjoyed the movie. And just because I'm strongly comparing it to a couple other movies, doesn't mean that I'm complaining that they're the same, it's just more of a recognition of some patterns I found interesting.
Ok. Here's my three contenders: Harry Dresden (HD). John Constantine (JC). Dylan Dog (DD).
WARNING: #3 has a bit of a spoiler for both Constantine and Dylan Dog, if you haven't seen them.
1. Private detective specializing in the supernatural.
All2. Helped by priest
HD; JC; not sure about DD
3. Kid sidekick/protegee who wants to do more and ends up dead
HD-Molly (still alive); JC-Chas; DD-Marcus
4. Tense, awkward, romantic-ISH relationship with strong, main female character
HD-Murphy; JC-Angela; DD-Elizabeth
5. Special relationship with big bads
HD- some fairies; JC-Gabriel(angel), Lucifer; DD-most monsters, esp. Gabriel (werewolf)
Fun Fact: Lucifer in JC's movie and Gabriel in DD's, both played by the same actor!
6. Gets help/advice from friends/bargaining with good magical creatures
HD- some fairies, some werewolves, etc.; JC-some disguised angels, Midnight; DD-zombies
7. Vehicle suuuuucks
HD- crappy broken car; JC- no car, Chas drives him if needed; DD-crappy broken car
8. Dry, sarcastic sense of humor
All
9. Originated in Books
HD- book series, some comics; JC- graphic novel series; DD- graphic novel series
movies,
interesting pattern,
