Part III - The  first wish…

Autumn had never been his favorite season, when leaves were taken down by the breezing winds flying across all paths of the streets or road, squeezing to the last of his lung any warm breath, leaving behind the cold and hollowness. And on top of that, he wasn’t like the felling of things getting cold so quickly, it made him be aware of the sound of time going by constantly, hurriedly…

”I’m home…” - Sho shouted excitedly at the front door like a husband, after a harsh day out side, now, coming back from work.

And just like a wife staying at home all day, taking care of everything, Aiba answered happily “Welcome home, Sho-chan!”

After helping Sho taking off his shoes, Aiba leaded him into the dinning room where dinner had been served; the smell of hot miso soup and curry made it way to Sho’s nose making his stomach growled, causing a giggle from his lover. With cheeks flushed like a tomato, Sho reached out to kiss his lover chapped lips, and whispered “Come on Ma-chan, let’s eat, you see, I’m hungry!!!”

Laughing like a moron, Aiba clung on Sho’s arm and pull him over the table where dinner had been severed and it smelled really good…Suddenly Sho flinch, he can felt the heat coming from Aiba’s body, it’s been a long time since the last time he had had his temperature that high, and it made Sho worried. Slowly, Sho turn Aiba around cupping his face with Sho’s palms, he pressed his forehead against his lover’s and sighed. As he expected, Aiba was having a fever, and it wasn’t just a fever, a dangerous one. He knew that he had to faced with things like this, he had read it in books and searched it on the internet, but still, he couldn’t take it as it has to be. There was one time that Aiba told him to get over it and the fact that they had to get used to it was obvious. But how could he just possibly do that, he was after all, a man who was full of regret…

So Sho tried to cheer up, or at least on the out side he did, then with a smile, Sho suggested “I’m gonna go to take a shower first while you take in some pills, okay? We need to do something about the fever that you are having, then we can have dinner together, I think today we should skip watching the sunset.” He already knew it but couldn’t help chuckling seeing a pout on Aiba beautiful lips, “just for today okay, if tomorrow you feel fine, we can watch it double time…okay?”

“Umn… promise?”

“Of course! Now get going and take some aspirin… I really need a long shower…”

“Yeah… your smell is stinking!!!” - Aiba cheerfully said while jumping into the bedroom.

Exhaling a sigh Sho quickly crabbed some clean clothes then went to the bathroom, he needed to be hurry; ‘cause he had a weird feeling that something really serious was going to happen. And whatever it was, Sho must stop it…

Five minutes later, which was a huge record, Sho got out from the shower, refreshed and full of energy, ready to face with any pout and spoil wishes and weird requests that Masaki would give him.

“Ma-chan, are you done taking your pills? Come on, the food is cooling down!” - Sho said out loud knowing that Aiba would hear you wherever he was now.

But

There was no answer. A train of fear running down through his throat, he dashed out from the kitchen where he was standing, still haft naked and water drops kept running down from his wet hairs. Rushed into the living room with hopes that his little lover would hide somewhere over there. He found no one.

“Okay, it’s okay, he is playing hide and seek with you, nothing to be worried about… take a deep breath… oh come on! Where are you Masaki!!” he told himself, panicked. But it seemed no use for him now, running across the hall where the luxury piano standing still, he headed to the bedroom, mouth whispering words of self comfort…

There was a mixture of fears, hurts, and cracking sound when truth being revealed as his eyes saw what he had to see; faced with things he had to face…

Masaki was laying there, eyes beautifully peacefully shut, hand still hold on a shatter piece from the broken glasses. Blood was dripping from the wound cut by those glasses. Like a mad man, Sho almost jumped to his side, vision blur out without knowing why, he crab the phone and dial for an ambulance, then he just sitting there motionlessly, he didn’t know what to do anymore, things like this were not suppose to be happening right? He thought he could stop it right? Then he couldn’t right? Why was that? He had tried his best, “never give up” that was what he thought, and, believe he could do. But why was he still sitting here and not doing anything? He knew Masaki was still alive, he had checked it or… had he? He didn’t know what he was doing. It was just like a blink of eye that an ambulance came and doctors told him to move aside, he didn’t want to, he want to sat with Masaki, he want to feel the warmth of his hand which was slowly cooling down bit by bit. He scream and laugh at the same time like a mad animal not wanting anyone to take his belongings away from him, things that he had to try so hard to catch. Then he sat there, those white figure over there finally left him as him be, not pushing him aside anymore, maybe because they knew it too well that fighting with hurt animal achieve nothing, and that there was someone they need to save laying on the floor.

Then someone came, some one with an incredibly hissed voice, and someone with a deeper voice, they both came at the same time and taking Sho‘s hands away from Masaki’s. He struggle but there was nothing he could do to stop those hallow white shirt man to take his lover away from him. Because there were hands, familiar slender hands from someone he knew, kept him away from Masaki, from the sun of his live from the only reason that he would survive. And for one moment Sho thought he was left a lone in the room. Just him with the biter heart beats that he believed they were his own. And when he decided that it’s time to hear something more than that, he scream, a long horrified scream. And he would continue to scream if there wasn’t a hard slap on his face, making his teeth bitted his own mouth.

With the scent of blood, he woke up to saw three familiar faces in front of him, all filed with tears, sweats, and fears, and hurts…

He realized that maybe he was not alone…

……………………………………………………………………

“Yes, thank you, I know… yeah, we’ll be right back,… um we just need to ask the doctors something… yeah, thanks… bye.”

“Did they call us back, Jun?” - the smallest man asked with muffled voice while his hairs were being stroked gently by the leader’s fingers.

“No, don’t worry, they just call to asked about … Aiba-chan’s condition. “ - Jun answered with a tiring smile.

Silence fell among them after that sentence, no one ever dared to talk about Aiba situation now. They were afraid, afraid to broke one certain already broken person who was still desperately holding Aiba’s hands as he lying on the hospital bed looking just as pale as the sheet underneath him would be. And also, they were afraid for themselves, for their own heart and feeling towards Aiba. They almost couldn’t take it when they first heard about it. Nino had burst out into tears in Ohno’s arms, whose tears silently falling down his cheeks, without a word. And for Jun, he acted as if the whole situation was his fault and was moody for such a long time. No one blamed him, because they knew he was the one that cried hardest and the one that fought for Aiba’s staying with the group for the longest of time, without anyone noticed. He just didn’t show out those things, because he was just simply being himself.

Even before Sho told them the truth, they had already known it, the way Aiba struggled while coughing in their restroom, the way he looked so pale at the end of the filming day, the way of his temperature went higher and higher no matter how they had tried to cool it down, they had known that something was wrong. But they just left it as it was, because they thought those signs were just a mere common cold, and that “their Aiba - chan was really easy to get a cold, so what’s the big deal anyway?” - They thought. And when it turned out to be not a common cold and a really big deal, they were panic and fell apart. Aiba was the one that helped them by telling them that everything would be all right. They had tried to believe that, and they did. But now, it was not, not “all right” at all. And it was bad…

They all didn’t know how long had they stayed like that, just silently sitting next to each other, gazing at the machine which was showing the beat of Aiba’s heart, watching his chest heaving soundlessly. They knew for sure that as long as he did those things, he was still alive. And they also knew that was a very scary belief.

“Leader, tell me the truth, what did the doctors said?” - that was Sho who broke the heavy silence among them first, his voice was rough and choked with emotion.

They knew, the one Sho loved the most was Aiba and the one Aiba would give all his life, his everything to was Sho. They knew it too well that no one dared to tell Sho what was the doctors said. They decided that as long as they still could keep the truth away from Sho, they would do it at all cost. But now, he asked them, putting an end to all the pretence that they had put on. The world was going to be shattered.

“Well… uhm…” the oldest hesitated he couldn’t be ready yet, not yet.

“Let me tell him,”- the youngest spoke up to cut Ohno’s line. - “The doctors said that he would wake up soon, and it was just a fever, no worry, if he feels well he can leave the hospital the next day”

“No, I’m not asking that, tell me what I don’t know…” - Sho continued, eyes still locked on Aiba’s face.

“How can we know something that you don’t know?” - Nino squeaked behind Ohno’s shoulder. He couldn’t look at Sho’s eyes while he was lying. And Sho knew it.

“How long? How long that he still can have before… before… that…” - Sho couldn’t finish his sentence, who could?

There was fear and sadness filled in the atmosphere before Ohno started to speak again. His voice was creepily calm.

“A year with the fine treatments and six moths without them… if he was strong enough to make it”

“He will make it! I know he will! And if he don’t I will make it for him. I’ll definitely do it, at any cost!” - his voice was heavily shaking as well as his hands, as well as his whole body…

“Calm down, Sho-chan, we all are going to do it, not just you. You are not alone, you have never been alone, and will not alone… okay?” - Jun spoke in gentle voice while patting Sho’s shoulder. Somehow, that gesture of comfort warmed Sho’s heart a little bit.

So then, together they waited, waited for the moment Aiba opened his eyes and returned to them…

___

It was when the Ohmiya felt hungry and went to find some food for all of them, and Jun finally succeeded in persuading Sho to go, wash his face and crab some coffee, that Aiba woke up.

“Jun-“ - Aiba’s voice seemed rough and death.

“Yeah, Aiba-chan, is there any thing that you need?” - he asked showing his concern.

“Where… What happened? … Why am I in the hospital?” - he asked  a slight of panic shown in his voice. Jun quickly stroke Aiba’s hair and said in the most natural voice he could ever manage.

“Well, you had a small fever and faint. By the way, I think you should be more careful while holding a glass; you almost cut your wrist with its broken pieces” - Jun glared at him earning a giggle from Aiba. With his dry voice now, the giggle sounded really weird.

“Yeah I know, thanks for your concern ne!” - he said with a wide smile.

Sometimes, Jun wondered how Aiba could just possibly smile like that. No matter how hard the situation was, he would always give smiles to himself and the others, occasionally, Jun would think that those were really silly, but now, in the situation like this, he couldn’t think that this was a silly one. In fact, it was really touching, and, actually made it way to warm Jun’s tiring heart.

The silence fell onto the room. But that was not an uneasy one, on the contrary, it was calm and thoughtful and understanding…

“Jun-chan…”

“Yeah?”

“Promise me…” - Aiba’s voice was hesitant but full of concern. And that made Jun tension rise.

“Uhm…?”

“Promise me that you would always be … Jun, okay?” - he smiled shyly, his eyes kept staring at the cells above his bed.

And yet again, another silence came and stayed, this time; it was really an uncomfortable and breathless silence. They did not talk in a while, Jun was staring at Aiba’ face and the other was staring at the cells. Aiba was waiting for him to reply, and Jun was waiting for Aiba to explain. They both wish that the other would talk first…

“Some day… in the past… you know, I was scared of you… really when you got mad and stuff… but some day, you were nice and full of love to provide… those time, I thought I was the happiest person on this planet…”

Jun felt like he was going to cry. He didn’t want to admit it but beside the one who was lying on the bed, he was the most easy-to-cry one of the group. He fought, thought, he could not cry, not now, while every single second that they left had to be devoted to Aiba’s happiness.

“And I miss that Jun, a lot… It feels like ages since the last time you smile or frown… really I don’t want people to be sad… at least… not because of me…”

Jun really wanted to give up now, fighting and waiting and hoping, those luxurious things were so hard to do. Why did they have to fight any way? All of the hopes were gone now; they knew exactly the time it came. And there was nothing left to wait for, to depend on… that was cruel…

“…Being sick does not mean giving up and waiting to die… you know… I had thought that ‘oh, it’s the end and nothing could be done now’… and when I looked at the others’ eyes, I felt like millions of knives were stabbing me. But I also know I was not alone… there were others… people I love… I had to make my remaining days valuable, for them… for me… for all of us…“

“Let’s… let’s make those… those days… your days… valuable… okay?” - Jun couldn’t help and he cried, but somehow, Jun felt happy…

“Umm…”

“Ha…” - Jun didn’t know why but he let out a quiet shaking laugh when he saw Aiba’s relieving face. Maybe it brought back memories of days that they were all fine and happy… it somehow seemed far, far, far away now…

“You should take some sleep… sleep well and you can soon get out of here.”

“Umm…”

And there in a room of a too white hospital, one on bed and one on a chair nearby, they both stayed quiet, both deep in the thought of their own…

“After all, maybe, he is ready…” - that was what Jun thought at that moment.
