Long time no post!
So...I'm still doing stained glass. And some painting. This last Saturday, I got to take a class on glass...painting! This is something I've been wanting to do for as long as I can remember. And the possibilities are, I think, enormous.
I started small. The process taught in the class (taken through
http://covenantartglass.com/) is one rather unique to this instructor. Usually, producing glass painting which incorporates painting on glass with fusing colored glass to the painted glass (in order to seal the paint in and render the painting impervious to wear--I could eat off this stuff), you need multiple "firings." With Stan's method, it's all done in a single firing.
For the class, Stan provided the students with multiple patterns to choose from, but made sure that those of us crazy artistic folk would feel free to do their own thing...which I did. I sketched something out in about 15 mins and started working on it. I think from start to finish, this took me about four hours. The finished product:
I know...it doesn't look like much...and it's kinda small--less than 6"x6", but this notion of being able to paint on/in glass is, for me, super ultra spiffy.
There's actually three layers of glass here. The layer I painted on (a special paint...very limited color choices), a layer of colored, cut glass (and some glass shards/sand called "frit"), and a layer of clear glass which separates the two layers. When fired, the three layers of glass merge into one and you get the effect of both the colored glass and the painted glass.
This is only the beginning.
