Went to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame inductions wherein Michael Whelan was inducted into said institution. For those of you unfamiliar with his art:
and
(these are those images of his that are the closest to my heart, but the fact is, I think he created the covers for maybe 15% of ALL of the books I own...which is a lot) He did the John Carter books, the Dragon Riders of Pern books, the Little Fuzzy books, the Pleocine Exile books. Anyway...I got to see him...hear him talk...he seemed normal--even with the halo.
We also went to the Seattle Art Museum. They had an Andrew Wyeth exhibit. Lots of people don't know who he was either, though sometimes they recognize his father--N.C. Wyeth.
I went prepared to be amazed, cause I've seen his stuff before and it's pretty danged amazing. But I gotta say...it was instead...a religious experience. After spending over an hour hovering over the paintings trying to figure out how he did what he did, I couldn't even talk. I had to leave the museum, I was so choked up. The brushwork, the detail, the colors, the love that went into every painting--it was beautiful beyond just about anything I've seen.
Here's some of the stuff they have on display down there--the images don't come near to the reality. If you have the chance and are interested...
All of these actual paintings (and many more) are at the SAM.
I spent all day today painting.
