I was gonna write something about the inauguration and our new president, but George R.R. Martin summed it up nicely:
http://grrm.livejournal.com/67654.html The ceremony was beautiful. Performances by Aretha Franklin, and a stunning quartet (Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Gabriela Montero, and Anthony McGill) playing a piece composed by John Williams! Wow. I had tears in my eyes that stayed all the way through Bush's departure by helecopter.
One thing that stuck out to me in his speech. Over and over again, he stressed the notion that we--all of us--must accept and embrace some responsibility for our circumstances:
"Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America."
"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world; duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of citizenship."
Hell yes I say!
Two million in attendance! Oh, to have been there. But it was good here--sharing this with my family.
What a day!
