All About Anise

Lots of details on her background, personality, relationships and her canon in general. Most of this is tl;dr, so each section has a one-sentence summary. Huge spoilers in here.

The Score

The Score is the record of the planet's memory, containing events of the past and future, beginning with the birth of Auldrant and ending with its annihilation. The people of Auldrant rely on the Score and get the Order of Lorelei to give them readings at least once a year. It often tells them things like what career they should pursue, whether they should have children, and so on. The Score is read and passed on to the people by Scorers.

The Planet Score, which was dictated to Yulia by Lorelei 2000 years ago, is the foundation of the Order of Lorelei. It dictated the next 2000 years of human history, and was said to promise prosperity to mankind if followed to completion. This Score was written on seven fonstones; the first six of which had been read.

However, when the seventh and final fonstone was discovered, it was learned that Yulia's Score ended not with prosperity, but with the utter destruction of humanity.

tl;dr version: The Score is a collection of prophecies that are always accurate.

The Order of Lorelei

The Order was created to protect the Score and ensure that prosperity for mankind would be reached. It is led by the Fon Master, who is the one person capable of reading the Planet Score. The army of the Order is known as the Oracle Knights, which are organized primarily into six divisions.

In recent years, Fon Master Ion began seeking reforms for the Order, believing the Score to be merely one of many possible futures, and that a more open and tolerant view of it would be necessary. The Grand Maestro disagreed; insisting that the Score is absolute and must be followed absolutely for mankind to reach prosperity. As a result, the Order was split into two factions, and reached a state of instability.

tl;dr version: It's a religion based on the Score.

Ion

Fon Master Ion is the supreme leader of the Order of Lorelei. He possesses some abilities unique to a Fon Master: for one, the use of Daathic Fonic Artes, techniques which can be far more powerful than regular fonic artes. He is also the only one capable of reading the Planet Score.

Two years ago, at age 12, Fon Master Ion succumbed to illness and passed away. His death was kept a secret by a few top-ranking members of the Order, and they created seven replicas--the most suitable of the bunch would replace the Fon Master, and the others were to be thrown into the volcano for disposal. To avoid detection, the previous Ion's Fon Master Guardian, Arietta, was transferred to a different position in the Order, and a new guardian, Anise, was appointed to serve the new Ion. Since Anise didn't know the previous Ion well, and Arietta was unable to come near the new Ion, no one caught on to the switch.

While Ion inherited all of the powers of his original, he did not have the same strength, and was weak through most of his life. He was advised by his doctor not to use Daathic Fonic Artes, but as the only person in the world who could use them, it became necessary on many occasions.

Anise grew very attached to Ion, and it could even be said that she loved him. She was more honest with him than with anyone else in her life, and would tell him all except one of her secrets... some of which he'd naively blurt out from time to time. When she learned that he was not the real Ion, but in fact a replica, Anise wasn't the least upset about being lied to. He was real enough to her, after all. Keeping Ion safe was not only her job, but something that made Anise truly happy.

...Which is why it hurt to have to lie to him. Grand Maestro Mohs had been pulling the strings from the very beginning: Anise had been his spy for the entire duration of Ion's life. Mohs used her parents as hostages to control her, eventually making her force Ion to read the Planet Score--something which required more strength than he possessed. He died, thanking Anise with his last breath.

Anise was racked with guilt, believed that she had killed Ion, and that she should have been the one to die instead. After calming down, she decided to see to it that Ion's ideas for reform within the Order would be made reality. She also seeks revenge on Mohs and Van for all the pain they had caused Ion.

tl;dr version: Anise loved Ion, betrayed him, and feels really really bad about it.

Grand Maestro Mohs

As far as ranks in the Order go, the Grand Maestro is just one step down from the Fon Master himself. However, Mohs disagreed with Ion's ideals. While Ion wanted people to take an open approach to the Score, believing it to tell only one of many possible futures, Mohs believed the Score to be absolute, and to deviate from it was an intolerable sin. He endeavoured to see the Score fulfilled, regardless of the means he would have to resort to.

Mohs did all that he could with his influence, even trying to directly convince the King of Kimlasca of the necessity of war. With Anise as his spy, he was able to follow the Fon Master's movements and have the God Generals interfere with peace efforts at every chance.

When Ion read the Planet Score for Mohs and perished, Mohs refused to acknowledge the reading he had received, and ran off to go make his own religion, leaving the Order of Lorelei without any of its leaders.

Shit happens, and he turns into a gigantic fat loon with wings. No, seriously. His brain starts deteriorating and he goes crazy, but his obsession with the Score remains.

tl;dr version: Mohs is a bastard and now he's fat too.

Family

Anise lives at the Daath cathedral with her father, Oliver, and her mother, Pamela. Some time ago, Oliver had been scammed out of a ton of money, and fell deep into debt. Mohs bailed him out, and to repay him, Anise's parents have been working for the Order without pay for years. Mohs took advantage of his power over the Tatlin family, and used Anise as his spy, threatening harm to her parents if she didn't follow his orders.

This is what made Anise so obsessed with money--if only she had enough, she and her parents could escape Mohs.

Anise loves her parents dearly, but is often frustrated with their naivety. They appear to be completely unaware of anything that Anise has been doing over the past two years--her spying, her fights with Arietta, her efforts to marry men well into their thirties...

tl;dr version: Anise's parents are dumb and Mohs is a bastard.

Love and Marriage

Anise is determined to get rich quick--not just for her own sake, but to help her parents as well. Not to mention a massive fortune would be a great help in restructuring the Order, which looks to be about ready to crumble into pieces. Though her reasons for wanting money are noble, Anise is willing to use any underhanded means to obtain it--including but not limited to feigning love for older, richer men.

Flirting is an easy job for Anise--she gets plenty of practice at it. She knows she's cute, and she uses it to her advantage whenever possible. She isn't very good at being subtle, though, and people tend to catch on pretty quick to her real goals with men. But she's stubborn enough that she won't give up, even when she's been called on it. Not even flat-out rejection will make her give up on a rich man. The only things that will drive Anise away are if the guy's personality turns out to be completely and utterly intolerable, or if he gets into a relationship with someone else. She won't back off completely until the relationship is official, though. Crushes don't count!

tl;dr version: Anise is an reverse predatorz who's out to get your money.
