In the waiting room @ doc's office, unable to not hear a thirteenish year old girl rake her stepfather(?) over the coals for his life choices while he tries to be caring, paternal(istic) and bond with her.

Her tone is glib, bright, furious and sarcastic. His is patient, beleaguered, tough. He's trying to give gentle guidance, and she's cross-examining.

I feel bad for them both, all the things making them the way they are in this exchange.

She just expressed surprise that there was ever a one dollar bill. He told her there was a two, too, and she sounded exasperated at the thought.

She just walked by me. She may be eleven.
