Preventative Mastectomy: What????

Oct 01, 2008 08:27

If you supposedly have a gene for breast cancer, is it logical to have a preventative mastectomy?

Are you fucking kidding me? That's practically like saying, "Well, life is terminal, so I'm planning my preventative corpusectomy," except MORE ridiculous because the cancer isn't even a certainty--because in case you were not aware of this, gene expression is actually highly dependent on lifestyle, not an inevitability.

I had the impression, from women who've had mastectomies, that it can actually be a profound psychological loss that makes you question your womanhood. Why are we so willing to mindlessly place our bodies on the surgeon's altar instead of making personal, holistic decisions for ourselves?

As far as I can tell, the underlying message of this so-called scientific method of cancer "prevention" is that our bodies are uncontrollable material monsters, at odds with us, and we must reign them in, control them--by force, if necessary. The hormones our bodies have produced for millennia are dangerous to us. The whole way our bodies regulate themselves is unfathomable and illogical--but modern medicine can fix that. We don't have to be uncertain anymore, uncertain of what these crazy meat sacks might do to us next. Is that true, or may science have a slightly skewed view of reality..?

Here's a revolutionary cancer prevention model: Personally regulate diet, exercise, and harmful chemicals in the forms of pharmaceuticals & cleaning products. Societally regulate & reduce harmful chemicals in air, water, and food.

Do we have human dignity or not? Are we adults who can take care of ourselves or not? Well? Are we? Are we men or mice?

health, science
