I tripped into the ‘gay’ end of town (colourfully highlighted on the map) to see how this place had become a Mecca for extravert homosexuals. I’m not sure, but it might have something to do with all the rainbow flags hanging about the place. There everywhere in the area. Not that you need them with the resident obviously hamming it up in their slightly cliché clothing, mannerisms and shops! Its also funny because, like me, there where a few people strolling around like the standard absent minded tourist. I almost got the felling from the place that most of the residents are actually putting on a show and some of them are there simply as a way to get attention; if the church hadn’t been against the ideas of the residents, this would have easily been a proclaimed as a Disney village.
I don’t think it helped that they were trying to stop Arnie passing the ‘no gay marriage’ law at the time, but the money collectors left me alone because I still had an equal rights sticker on my bag that I’d picked up in NY and looked like I’d already donated or signed against it!
Went to the Japanese quarter too and learnt about their existence before and after the war in SF. It was really interesting they way it lead you around the area and informed you with large signs in front of non-descript buildings. It was a nice afternoon wander!
Went to another pub in the evening (missed the one with Tommy’s written over it as the three big black guys, with menacing expressions and bulges in the wrong places, looked like they didn’t want company tonight). Arh well, must revise Rule…thingy number!
