Asking for recommendations continues to be the least fun ever. Sigh.
On the bright side,
bookelfe gave me more icons to babble about! Uh, comment if you would like to talk about my icons/have me pick icons for you to talk about. You know, the usual. This meme is as addictive as
isurrendered. I have a problem.
Keywords: [ss] as I do thee
by littledust - Give me that man that is not passion's slave.
So, my senior year of high school, I fell madly in love with Hamlet and I will still swear that Hamlet and Horatio are in TRUE LOVE. Keywords and comment are from Hamlet's monologue about how he totally loves Horatio forever. My favorite bit is "Give me that man that is not passion's slave, and I will wear him in my heart's core, ay, in my heart of heart, as I do thee." ♥_♥ To make this icon, I searched Getty Images for some dudes being loving!
Keywords: [lit] all the world drops dead
by littledust - (I think I made you up inside my head.)
You know, I wish I could have studied more poetry in college. I graduated without ever taking a class just on poetry, and I didn't have to study much of it at that. The short of it is that I can't call myself a student of Plath, just someone who has read some of her poems. I would love to sit around and discuss the romanticization of mental illness in artists (particularly women, where it becomes fetishization), Plath's appropriation of Holocaust imagery, the role her husband played in editing her journals, and the irritating tendency we as a culture have of fixating on an artist's death rather than an artist's life. The keywords + comment for this icon come from her poem "Mad Girl's Love Song" because I love the rhythm of the poem and its bizarre imagery. My favorite Plath poem is "Lady Lazarus," though. It's triumphant and terrifying and makes her into so much more than a victim.
Okay, so maybe I have some studious opinions on her after all...
Keywords: [misc] singing each to each
by littledust - I do not think they will sing to me.
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is one of my favorite poems, bar none. I love imagery and rhythm and tragedy, what can I say? And this is my favorite kind of tragedy: ordinary rather than grand and sweeping. Poor Prufrock. I like to think that at least one mermaid would sing to him if only he asked. I also LOVE MERMAIDS and searched Google Images until I found one I wanted to icon.
Keywords: [dw] joyful girl
by agirlnextdoor - The world owes me nothing; we owe each other the world.
ROSE! This is Rose being delighted by time travel and adventures and oh, S1 of New Who, I miss you so much. Keywords + comment from "Joyful Girl" by Ani DiFranco, which is a mellow, happy, lovely song.
Keywords: [spn] nightmare girl
by agirlnextdoor - Once she wanted me to exorcise her self-possession.
This icon features Jo Harvelle, in the scene where possessed!Sam menaces her. At the time I uploaded this icon, that episode was still her last appearance on the show and fandom as a whole didn't have much hope that her character would ever be back. Heck, I think at that point the show hadn't even featured a female hunter. The keywords + comment come from "Nightmare Girl" by Aimee Mann. Combined with the words, this icon is kind of My Feelings on SPN and Women. Jo had disappeared from the show without becoming a hunter. She got kidnapped and tied up and had to be rescued by the guy she has a crush on but doesn't reciprocate. Jo's the little girl in the nightmare; she is not allowed to be the self-possessed hunter.
Possibly I should watch 5x10 and update my icon collection!
Keywords: [music] ballerinas that have fins
by agirlnextdoor - How many fates turn around in the overtime?
This is the cover of From the Choirgirl Hotel, which is the first Tori Amos album I ever bought. Man, I have so many thoughts on this album and what it means to me that it really deserves its own separate post. I'll try to summarize. I love the underwater nature of the album, since water is such a feminine element and I also feel that it is my element, I guess in a spiritual kind of way, although I lean more and more to the atheist side of things. I used to listen to albums for months at a time (there was a period of senior year where I listened to parts of The Wall every day for about two months), so I have all twelve FTCH songs under my skin and in my mind and heart. The keywords + comment come from the first song on the album, "Spark," specifically the bridge: How many fates turn around in the overtime / Ballerinas that have fins that you'll never find. In
the music video, Tori is fleeing through the woods from a guy who kidnapped her, having escaped from the trunk of his car despite being blindfolded and her hands bound. During the bridge of the song, she submerges herself in a river to get away from her pursuer, the blindfold comes off, and she emerges on the other side having rescued herself. The man after her cannot cross the roiling water. Listening to From the Choirgirl Hotel is to submerge myself in a sonic landscape.
I, uh, have an intimate relationship with music.
Keywords: [gg] everything is plastic
by agirlnextdoor - Gossip Girl: a deep commentary on modern voyeurism.
This is Vanessa from Gossip Girl, holding her camcorder. The keywords come from "Ghost of Corporate Future" by Regina Spektor, who is a New Yorker. The comment is my own amused take on GG, though I don't think the show is striving for as much depth as the TWOP recapper does. I'm kinda sad that the show doesn't have Vanessa wandering around filming everything anymore, as poorly justified as it was at times. Gossip Girl (the blogger) exists because teenagers are willing to take snapshots of rich teens and post them online. The audience feeds itself, in a way, but the rich kids, Serena in particular, also make themselves objects. This is why Lady GaGa performing in an episode is so damn appropriate. I think that the show is mostly telling the story of teenagers who fight and fall in love and mess around with each other in all senses of the phrase, but there are little nuggets of commentary on America's crazy new age of voyeurism. I mean, Twitter. End of story.
Keywords: [glee] straight from the burning bush
by agirlnextdoor - Look, who are we to question the Lord?
Hee, this icon comes from 1x08, in which one Noah Puckerman has a prophetic dream which makes him realize, in his own words, "Rachel was a hot Jew, and the good Lord wanted me to get into her pants." It is a bit suspect that this dream followed his mother guilting him for not dating a nice Jewish girl, but it is much more hilarious to believe that God occasionally speaks to Puck.

by agirlnextdoor - Usagi has mad art skilz.
In the anime-only arc of Sailor Moon R, everyone has lost their memories until the world needs the Sailor Senshi again. HOWEVER, Mamoru still does not remember his epic love story with Usagi, so they go back to their pre-reincarnation revelation S1 bickering, interspersed with Usagi's hilarious attempts to get him to remember their past lives and current secret identities. Once, she tries to do it by showing him hand-drawn pictures. I love her so much. Keywords quote The Princess Bride, because it is awesome.
