We, as the United States of America (and many citizens, but that's an entirely different post) aren't afraid enough of being dumb.
Consider, if you will, decades ago. Russia launches Sputnik into outer space. We, the United States of America say "holy shit! The Russians are kicking our ass! Let's put a motherfucker on the moon!" and we did it. The US Government, post haste, passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which in turn created NASA, and we fucking did it. We weren't gonna deal with being dumber than some ruskies. Nowadays, someone comes up with a major advancement and we say "fuck it. We'll buy it from them later.'
