So here I sit in my hotel in Atlanta. There's a computer lab downstairs, so that's convenient, so I don't have to be cut off from the internet *twitch*. I've vacated my room because housekeeping staff were on their way my way so I figured I'd give 'em some room.
This trip has been so far, so good. I ended up with 18 students going, which is a drop off from the 40-50 that have gone in past years but definitely a blessing because it is a more manageable trip. At this point we've been downtown to Peachtree Center on the first night--I ate at Gladys [Knight] and Ron [Winans]'s Chicken and Waffles which was quite a nice restaurant (and I actually had chicken and waffles too!) on Saturday we went to the Martin Luther King memorial center with the museum, birth house, and grave side of Dr. King, which was basically the crux of our trip. We also went to eat at The Varsity and went to the Apex (African American Panoramic Experience) Museum for a pretty cool exhibit. We also went down to Morehouse/the AUC for a bit before I turned them loose for the evening. Last night was free time and folks had the freedom to cavort all over the A, and I caught up with Stacy (who now lives down here and works at Georgia State) and went to the Fox Sports Grill, which was pretty nice (I had mentioned ESPNZone and she suggested that this place was better) where we watched most of the 2nd half of the Pats-Broncos game. Speaking of which, I'ma need for the Panthers to win today--if not, we've lost not only all of the teams to which I have legitimate ties (2 more dropped yesterday with the Skins and the Pats [though I didn't mind seeing the Pats lose cuz part of me's still a hater]) but also all the teams from the East Coast (edit: I forgot about the Steelers, who I guess you could consider an east coast team [even though Shittsburgh's practically the Midwest] That being said, the Steelers are playing the Colts. The team from the wrong side of PA vs. the team that snuck out of Baltimore in the middle of the night. Who do i dislike the least?). And if you consider that in the past year, the NBA finals were San Antonio and Detroit, the NCAA football championship game was USC and Texas, and the World Series was White Sox and 'Stros, I'm really gonna need for my coast to step its game up!!
Anyway, I've noticed that this trip is valuable if I treat it as a business trip (which, honestly, it is). The first night I was here I outlined a presentation I'll be giving later this month, and I also intend on working up my other presentation for the conference i'm going to in 2 weeks down in Tampa while I'm here. So I should come out of this weekend having gotten some work done--hell, I already have.
Speaking of my travel, it turns out that in a span of about 2 months (Dec. 23-Feb. 23) I will have been out of town 4-5 times. I started out going up to Delaware/Maryland for the holidays. Then it was Charlotte (if you can count that, and why not? I did spend the night down there) on the 30-31 of Dec. for the bowl game. I'm down here in ATL this weekend; in two weeks I'll be triangulating to Tampa and back here to A-town for a conference and a Battle of the Bands, respectively, and February 18-22, i'll be up in Boston for the NACA national conference. For that matter, if you got back 2 weeks, you can also tack on my whirlwind trip to NY for my grandfather's funeral. so 6 travels, 7 locations in like 10 weeks. Crazy.
Anyway, that's it outta me for now. I'll be back in the G-spot by tomorrow night, and there'll probably be more (plus pictures) once I return. Holla!
