It isn't a pitbull puppy they are getting. It is a fully grown 3-5 year old pitbull from the Humane Society that isn't spade yet. That's the reason why they can't take her until the 18th. So they will be getting this dog fresh from surgery then five days later taking her into the chaos that will be Thanksgiving ( Read more... )

Pitbulls aren't illegal to own there. Unfortunately, a few years back a dog fighting ring got broken up. If you knew how small a town Milton is you'd understand how freakin' weird that is to me!

All dogs can be dangerous. There is a report where a pomeranian killed a baby. It's how they are raised. When I was a kid Dobermans were the big threat with all the stories about inbreeding making their skulls too small for their brains making them crazy. These days it's pitbulls because of people training them to fight and/or be mean.

We own a pit and she's scared of her own shadow, but she's the dumbest, sweetest dog I've met. When I worked in a doggie daycare we never had a problem with the pits other than they were highly active which was why they were in daycare. The golden retrievers were the ones who started fights all the time. All the pits wanted to do was chase the ball all day. LOL

Well, that's just it! My brother didn't ask if he could bring her. Not that we hate dogs, I have a mini-weenie and my roommate has the pit. It's funny as hell to watch them play. But my dad isn't in the best of health, and my step-brother has a lot of health problems. My step-mom kind of has her hands full. Bringing a brand new dog into this chaos is inconsiderate.

Yeah, that's just it. If you're not responsible with raising them, as you said, any dog can be dangerous. And bringing a dog into chaos when you haven't had the time to train them and get a feel for their temperament is extremely irresponsible and dangerous.

My main issue with dogs is that I haven't met many well-trained dogs. Most people I know who own dogs don't seem to be responsible about training them, which is very frustrating. Case in point-my friend who has 3 dogs. I visited her house while pregnant with my son and she could not stop her dog from trying to jump on my pregnant belly or from growling at me. Which is both a potential hazard to my baby and does not create a home environment where guests can visit and relax.

I don't think my brother has what it takes to train a dog like this. Pits are technically a terrier breed and they are ALWAYS stubborn. We have problems with Scarlet because she's young and stubborn.

We're teaching her not to jump because Trish's son is slightly scared of dogs. He's gotten a lot better for being around my dog which was why Trish decided to try out their own puppy. It really helped that he got to help raise her from a puppy, y'know? This is a grown dog they are bringing into their family. And he doesn't have experience training a dog period where Trish and I do.

Stupid brothers.

Which is exactly my issue. Too many people get dogs without realizing the work that goes into properly training said dog. And, as you said, pitbulls are a difficult to train breed. That's not to say it can't be done-I know some people with absolutely well-behaved pit bulls.

So, it's a crappy situation and I feel for your family. I hope things go okay for you over the holidays :(
