When the Valley People were captured by the Plains People, they were scattered to separate cities, compounds, a thousand places; even mothers and children could not cleave. The lucky ones went to mines, where they lived in communal cells, but even among them, many traditions were lost.
...Until the Valley People began to disappear from the Plains People's world. The place they reappeared was dark, dripping, confusing... but there were tunnels and things like caves. A New World, but more like the Valley than the Plains. The People were less than they had been, but together: in hiding, but free.
