Torchwood drabble: Apple and Tree

Notes: Written for tw100 challenge #216 The New World. Set shortly before the beginning of Miracle Day, vague references to 4x01 The New World. I so wanted to title this with the Japanese proverb "The child of a frog is a frog," but it would have been problematic in British English. Alas.
Rhys wanted a better world for their child; Gwen could only focus on the world they currently lived in--which meant introducing Anwen to guns. In an emergency, they couldn't have her crying at the shooty things.
Rhys insisted they start slowly. While he distracted Anwen with pudding, Gwen quietly placed an unloaded handgun nearby.
But as soon as the child noticed it, she squealed, reaching out with chubby fingers. When Gwen lifted it, Anwen laughed with delight.
Rhys sighed. "Fine. But she's wearing goggles and those ear thingies."
"Of course! Rhys, what kind of mother do you think I am?"
