M’gann was not happy.

Rationally she knew that yes, this was actually a very clever way to divert the League’s investigations by letting it believe it had all information on Artemis. It had the League thinking they knew all they needed to know, kept Cadmus out of it, and it even gave Artemis the freedom to wander out as much as she desired. It was an ideal situation.

And yet a larger part of her was wholly enraged that the experimental human had gone behind her back and exposed herself like this. She had gotten the League directly involved in her situation (even if they didn’t know all the details) and Red Arrow had nearly caught her beating a professional assassin in combat. Artemis was disgruntled about throwing the fight but the older hero was already suspicious.

Wally’s obvious dislike for the blonde was not helping matters. She supposed that the tension was inevitable what with Artemis taking Red Arrow’s place as Green Arrow’s protégé, but the hostility was confusing and troublesome. If Wally kept butting heads with the girl, it could cause problems.

“He really doesn’t like me,” Artemis commented, watching the speedster sneer from afar. M’gann glared at her.

“He’ll get over it,” she snapped. The blonde blinked at her. Mentally M’gann added, I can’t believe you did this.

Hey, they’re off our backs! Artemis countered. Chill out. And I’m keeping my G-Gnome in my drawer, by the way.

You’re going to ruin everything, M’gann warned. Red Arrow doesn’t believe you’re Green Arrow’s niece. If he investigates -

We’ll deal with it. Artemis smiled at her, not maliciously but with so much contentment that M’gann didn’t know if there was any logical reply. She left the room, shoving down the bubbling rage threatening to spill out of her like the tide.

Stupid, stupid, human! Yes, Artemis had been helpful on the mission, no one could deny that (except Wally, but even he knew she’d done well). But this was dangerous, it was impulsive, there were just too many risks.

We’ll deal with it. What did that even mean? For a brief moment, M’gann imagined Artemis stalking Batman around Mt. Justice, listening for any hint of her name. This was stupid. How were they supposed to hide this from the League? How were they supposed to hide this from her uncle?

“M’gann?” She looked up to see Kaldur smiling benignly, questions in his eyes. It took a second to realize she’d very nearly walked into him. She jumped back, blushing apologetically. “Is something troubling you?”

“I’m fine!” she assured him, smiling brightly. Kaldur still smiled, but his eyes didn’t trust her.

“M’gann,” he admonished gently. “As team leader, I have a need to know of your concerns.”

“It’s…” He didn’t have to know the whole truth, she supposed. Kaldur was wise, maybe he would understand. “Wally’s having a difficult time about Artemis, and I just worry…” That everything will come out, that things will be ruined and people will be hurt.

Kaldur nodded sympathetically.

“It is difficult to see a friend struggle,” he agreed. “I know that you particularly dislike such conflict, but we must trust that Wally will be able to put his personal feelings aside for the sake of the team.”

“Yeah,” she sighed. “I guess.”

Kaldur looked at her curiously. “What do you think of her?”

M’gann blinked. “What?”

“What is your opinion of Artemis?” Kaldur repeated. His smile was gone and she couldn’t help the shiver of dismay in her throat. Was this a test, a trick? Did he know?

“I think…” M’gann tried not to lie. “I think she’s skilled. But I’m not sure how well she’ll fit into the team.” Especially if she antagonizes Wally.

“I appreciate your concerns,” Kaldur said gently, placing his hand on her shoulder. “But trust in our mentors; they must have a reason for placing her here.”

“Of course,” M’gann smiled. If Kaldur was saying this, he didn’t know the truth. None of them knew.

Of course.
