I heard yesterday that Yahoo is discontinuing Geocities. You can no longer create a new account, and existing sites will be removed later this year.
Almost everything non-text that I put on the internet before my senior year of college was hosted on Geocities. I created over ten sites (perhaps tens of them) in an effort to decentralize stuff I was posting on large forums, so that even if one image went down because of exceeded bandwidth, others would stay up. However, this decentralized approach led to me creating sites, uploading and posting a single image, and forgetting about them; those sites were taken down after some pre-set period of disuse. Though I lost irreplaceable images because of this (at school, I had no hard drive of my own, so my online copies were my only ones), they were only images that I edited in Paintbrush in attempts at comedy.
So my other sites are gone. But I still have three main ones. One was my attempt at a personal website that was forever a work in progress (most Geocities sites are like that, but at least mine didn't have obnoxious "Under Construction" gifs), and the other two I used to host images and other media for this very journal. You can bet I'm grabbing everything from these sites. I don't know when or if I'll edit the dead images in this journal back to life when the sites finally go down, but I will definitely have them offline.
