A week ago yesterday (I think), I sent an e-mail to my work's office asking about carpool arrangements; in turn, they sent an e-mail to everyone working nights that I needed help getting home at night. The way it turned out was that someone on the night shift, in the same department where I work, lives in the next town to mine. I sit next to her now.
I said I would help pay for gas. She said she spends about $60 a week on gas, and suggested I pay half of it. I sort of agreed just to avoid haggling, as I thought it was pretty steep (I only ride with her on return trips, and she's only driving a few miles extra on my account). But then I realized that although she's getting paid for gas, I'm paying for getting a long distance home promptly after work and not having to find a place to live. Paying about $130 per month for that is a fine deal.
The only other hurdle is my schedule. Five days a week, I'm getting home about 2 am. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I'm getting up 6:30-7 am and going to camp around 8:30. I leave camp at 4 pm and get to work at 5, staying there till 1:30 am. This means that three days a week, I'm more or less occupied for about 18 hours. Two of these days, I'm running on 4-5 hours of sleep.
My first of these days was yesterday. I survived without pain (with the help of aspirin in the morning and a cup of Mr. Pibb at 5 pm). I didn't know if it would be possible, but now I think I can make it.
The kids are fun.
