it's all looking realy good. Is the book sewn into the spine of the cover or is it sepperate? it's hard to see in the pictures

It is a "limp" book (ie. it has no stiffenings in it, just paper and fabric) but yes, the pages are sewn to the cover along the fold.

i've seen examples with small wooden toggles or beads tied into the book end of the strap to secure it. does the strap itself secure it enough?

The strap can tie closed. It's just looped in the photo.

that makes sense.
The only thing i would say is that you may want to wax the pleather. I've had varying luck with pleather keeping water out in the past and i've found using the same wax i use on my larp leathers on the pleather helps keep the stuff inside dry.
