You may be confusing elite and elitist. Elite is your social standing; elitist is how you carry yourself and interact with others. But charges of elitism against Democrats are nothing new.
And while I personally LIKE the idea of an erudite and brilliant man leading the country, there's this anti-intellectual current that runs through America - people want a Prez they can have a beer with, not someone who's actually smarter than they are and (more importantly to them) comes across that way. And for better (for the country) or worse (for the campaign), I think Obama does come across like that.
I mean, look at our last two presidents - Clinton was a southun man from a poor Arkansas family, and he TALKED like it, even though he was also a brilliant lawyer and Rhodes scholar. Despite Bush being the son of one of the more powerful and wealthy families in America, and growing up in Kennebunkport, Maine, he had that Texas twang and everyman persona down pat.
Obama has the perfect voice for a newscaster or radio personality (probably NPR radio, though), but he doesn't "sound" like your average joe.
