the 2 of us went up north for the 2nd time this summer. it was really hot and nice out, but it was very very buggy. we couldn't really sit around outside at all, so it was mostly driving, hiking, a bit of swimming, and constant swatting. first we found a suitable lake and swam a bit. there were wild strawberries by the lake so i picked 2 for each of us. we went on 2 separate hikes on trails to lakes, neither of which we found. we walked around in a shallow stream, and i saw a swimming leech well over 2 inches long. we saw at least 2 quails, one of whom puffed and clucked in order to get our attention and lure us away from its chicks. when we didn't follow it, it chased after us to try to interest us a second time. very interesting since usually animals don't interact and certainly don't seek attention from humans! we swam in a 2nd lake, but by now we were getting so badly bitten that it was really hellish outside. so we drove to the clubhouse and sat around inside studying linguistics. it started thundering more (it had been grumbling in the distance all day) and it rained a bit. when the rain let up, we drove a bit, and walked to 2 waterfalls. finally it started to rain a bit more, so we made our way out of the park. on the way out, we saw 2 deer and 2 raccoons. not exactly a pleasant and relaxing day, but nonetheless an interesting, eventful, and rejuvinating one. lightning illuminated the sky bright as day as we drove back, and the lights went out in mcD.
