I guess that depends on what you consider old-school. The first game I remember getting almost obsessive over was Road Blasters. It was in the arcade area of the bowling alley when I was little. Then my parents bought me a copy on our NES and I loved being able to play at home.
There was, of course, a frenzy when Super Mario Bros. 3 came out. My brother was the first in his class to own the cartridge, so I think I was "cool" by relation. I only got ok at playing it, but it's definitely still a cool game.
Super Nintendot (I think) brought Donkey Kong Country, the first game I ever managed to play to the end. I love that, too.
The first game I got really good at was on the N64, StarFox64! I still love that game, and will play it at the drop of a hat. I'm still trying to knock my brother's best score off the top 10 list. I've got the top 9, but I won't rest until I own that list!
Man, I wish my NES still worked. I need to check out the SNES, to see if it still works.
