TM Challenge 232

Ay, with Gareth. Dost know my brother Gareth? The youngest. He's the fool. My mother was kind to none of us but Gareth, because it was through kindness a person could win Gareth's loyalty, and he is loyal to her, ay, and he does what she wills of him, at a word. She's no fool herself; she knows what should be done to have what she wants. Gareth could never see it in her.

Gareth would do near anything bid him, were it kindly asked.

When we would have left home he longed for my mother, and at night sometimes he wept for her. A fool, I swear to thee. He would do well to meet with a rough hand, to be told sharply, as we were, to be directed, as we have been, as we are. O, he has taken instruction from Kay, but he hath a healthy pride, and he told himself it was his knightly duty to rise above such things as might injure it.

And he is proud because he believes himself to be borne of a worthy mother, believes he is young and strong and capable, and loved, and, ay, he is. And he believes himself and his family to be perfect, and he shall find soon enough that's not so.

And it would be well were he a little tempered. But I know he shall not be.
