Both of my parents have discovered Tamora Pierce, went to the library, checked out ALL of her books in one go, and are officially in love with her. (With each other, too, I assume.)
Why is it that the most kickass scifi/fantasy female characters and the most diverse character casts (gender/race/sexual orientation) are in YA lit? (Which, on reflection, is probably why I love it. And I could be wrong. This just happens to be the trend I've noticed in an entirely casual, not at all delving-into-the-topic-in-any-depth sort of way.)
Anyone know of any scholarly type thinking on the subject? (I will hit JSTOR and MLA later, just too lazy to do it at the moment.)
