I finally decided I would sit down and update tonight. I know it has been a long time but its alright - ya’ll will live. In fact I keep starting updates and never finishing them so I promised myself that before I read anyone else’s updates (which is tough because I like keeping up to date with peoples’ new jobs (Kelly!) and weddings, babies, relationships, and over all bitches (nick!), and all that crap.
On the first front, Tim bought another car so we are now a two-car family. Our two pretty blue babies sit out front glittering in the noon-day sun…when Tim remembers to wash them. We did need the new car. Between classes and work my hours are just terrible and whoever has Kinsey needs to have the car incase there is an emergency. Plus the warranty on the VW expires in 30,000 miles. Not to mention the Passat sucks down premium and gas prices are outrageous! So we bought brand new. Got an excellent deal and a 200,000 mile/20 year warrant w/ no deductible. Affordable monthly payments and I am not complaining. Tim got a light car and a 5 -speed so he isn’t complaining. The new one takes regular gas and gets awesome mileage so the check book isn’t complaining. Life is gooooooddd.
I think everyone knows I started my internship two weeks ago. Basically I am given a nice corner office…(lol okay it is the entire back half of the student organizations room) and keys to a thousand miscellaneous places along with a staff of twelve semi-willing students to do my evil bidding. However my corner desk is huge, and my office chair is nice and the hours in the office pass amazingly fast. I never feel like I completed enough, though, and always want to stay a few extra hours. I have come to accept the fact that I am a work-a-holic.
My first week back was bad, mainly because I was missing Kinsey so much and feeling so horribly about leaving her, but also because of the long days I needed to put in to get everything up to speed. She is doing better with the separation then I am but I am getting there. I will admit (guiltily) that once I get busy I don’t think about her much even though I keep a picture of her and Tim right in front of my computer. Its those slow times that really kill me. Okay I really don’t get to many of those so I should say it is those moments where I pause and let myself ponder on how much my daughter is probably missing me.
However, as much as I miss Kinsey I do love my job. One, I set my own hours and have the power to do my own thing. I got to switch the hours of the gift shop and bowling alley and change some of the procedures. Joel (my boss) said I will never learn if I don’t have freedom so I have exactly that. Two, I not only get to get up close and personal to big-wigs at our school (like Elaine Pontillo) but my first day on the job I was on the phone with the Director of Affiliate Productions at MTV Networks. How f*^((*^ awesome is that?!? MTV Networks is a huge branch of Viacom who is only like one of the biggest media conglomerates in the world. Okay, Okay, its not like I am talking to Sumner Redstone here or the Gates man himself but it sure is a break outside of my little Fort Wayne world.
Other then the awesome people who make my job work I like learning the things I do. I got to do interviews my first week back and now I am working on scheduling and handling employees and especially time management. These are things that a book can’t adequately teach you. Budgeting, PR, HR, Marketing, and Management all rolled into one. The only thing I hate is since I am girl intern people seem to mistake that for “secretary”. I am going to put a sign on my office door that says “NO, I DO NOT KNOW WHERE JOEL IS”. I work under Joel, not for him, I do not know his appointments for the day and I do not take his calls. Secondly, Joel is the Associate Director of Student Life. The whole “student life” portion of his title has nothing to do with me. I find out about stuff just like every other student and I am not involved on the inside “stuff” unless it involves my portion of the building.
However, Joel is an excellent boss - he lets Kinsey run around my office and he even bought Tim and I tickets on the school’s Cedar Point trip. Good stuff.
Okay and now for my ending story of the night. Being accessible to my staff is of major importance. I left for dinner tonight though and left my cell phone at home. Thinking about my well trained staff I didn’t think it was huge deal I forgot my cell phone until we were driving back from dinner and what to my wandering eyes did appear?!?! But our entire campus and surrounding blocks were blacked-out. Power outage apparently. UHHH_OHHH this means my all glass building is without a security system and the recreation center and gift shop should be open and require electricity.
I called Joel frantically on Tim’s cell phone. I knew if my staff couldn’t reach me he would be the next one they dialed. Luckily that “student life” portion of Joel’s life had been happening and he had been in the building when the lights went out. He said my staff handled it like old pros and got everyone out and the place locked up and secure for the night.
Wheeewwww good to know.
Well night ya’ll
