Looking back at their years of friendship, Lindsay had always assumed she and Jill had established a line they wouldn’t cross. There had been flirting, so subtle neither had ever acknowledged it, and times where it had almost seemed as if it could go further. But in the end, one of them had backed away before it developed into anything; usually by finding someone else to date.
They were too much alike. Both of them sucked at relationships. Her failed marriage and Jill’s very recent break up with Luke only seemed to further prove that point. Their commitment issues would be able to keep a therapist in business for years. They fared better as friends and Lindsay’s marriage to Tom had put a stop to thoughts about a possible relationship years ago.
And yet, on the night of Tom remarrying, Lindsay found herself lying next to Jill in bed, lazily drawing circles on her very naked back. The day had been eventful; to say the least; sometimes in unexpected ways. From Jill’s very public break up to Lindsay ending up at Tom’s wedding, well, the alley behind the building, basically getting yelled at by Heather, and them finally catching a killer.
When Jill had shown up at her apartment with a bottle of Tequila, Lindsay had all too gladly invited her in. She couldn’t really recall how they ended up kissing, even less naked in her bed; she knew even less where they would go from now. All she knew was that this, whatever this was, made her feel more at home and relaxed than anything before.
She ran her fingers over Jill’s forehead, gently brushing some hair out of her face. She felt her stir and pulled her hand back, unsure of how Jill was going to react. Lots of alcohol had never made for the soundest decisions and this one could be one they’d regret for a long time to come.
“I didn’t mean to wake you.”
Jill yawned and stretched slightly. “Is ok,” she mumbled. “What time is it?”
Glancing at the clock on her night stand, Lindsay said, “Close to three.”
“I should go home.” But instead of sitting up, she only slid further under the covers and closed her eyes.
“Or you could stay.”
Jill gave a her sleepy smile and Lindsay wondered if this was the right time to bring up any of the many questions she had. She couldn’t even begin to sort through them in her head; each one seeming as important as the next.
“You think that’s a good idea?”
The question almost made Lindsay laugh out loud. “No.” She shook her head. “But then, neither was anything that happened tonight.” She chuckled softly and could hear Jill join her.
“We really messed up, huh?” Jill looked at her curiously, the smile still on her lips. Lindsay really wanted to say that they hadn’t but that would have been a lie. It hadn’t been their best idea and she wasn’t sure their friendship could survive a failed relationship; should they try one.
Instead, she shrugged non-committally. “Maybe.”
“We can always blame it on this particular day, right?”
“Or,” Lindsay started and the hopeful expression on Jill’s face encouraged her further, “We could finally take the step we should have taken years ago. See where it takes us.”
“And you think that’s a good idea?”
“No,” Lindsay said and grinned at her, “but we’ve had worse.”
