Chapter 11

Ten minutes. And she was close to completely freaking out. If Addison was on time, she had only ten more minutes to pull herself together and be ready. A first step, she decided, was to glance down and make sure she was fully dressed. Not that she really thought there was a chance she had missed something, like say a shirt, but you could never be too sure.

Pacing up and down in her room, she tried to calm her nerves. She had no idea what to expect from tonight, she only hoped for nothing too fancy. That wasn’t really her style. Plus, she was too focused on figuring out what this all meant. So, the more comfortable and quieter it was, the better.

Then, five minutes. She took a last glance into the mirror and walked down to wait next to the door. Another minute later, she decided against it and sat down on the couch in the living room, determined not to look too eager or anything.

When the knock on the door filled the silence, she threw away all her plans of not seeming too eager and all but jumped from the couch to hurry to the door. Swiftly opening it, she smiled widely at Addison. “Hi,” she greeted her happily. If she kept the cheerfulness up, Addison wouldn’t notice just how nervous she was. It was a good, most-likely-to-work plan as far as she was concerned.

“Ready to go?” Accompanied by a smile as Addison leaned against the doorframe, looking at her intently.

“Yep,” she nodded in response, turning around to get her jacket and purse.

The moment of silence grew longer and heavier between them and Izzie wracking her brain to find some starting point for a conversation. Looking over at Addison, she saw the shy smile and how she was playing with her hands, realizing that she might be just as nervous as herself. Slightly reassured that she wasn’t the only one close to having a nervous breakdown, she took a deep breath and grinned at Addison.

“So, where are we going?” she asked, locking the door behind her.

“A nice and quiet restaurant just around the corner,” she replied and then added, “If you like.”

Nodding in agreement, Izzie gave her a warm smile. They walked down the driveway, Addison just a step behind Izzie, her hand resting on her lower back. Feeling the warmth from the touch, there was a light flutter of her heart at the sweet, protective gesture.

Arriving on the sidewalk, Addison turned towards her. “Do you want to walk?” she offered.

Again, Izzie only nodded her head in agreement. “You look really nice, by the way,” she said quietly, taking a quick glance at her to see how it was received.

“Thanks.” The smile that accompanied the single word told Izzie it had been the right thing to say.

It wasn’t far to the restaurant and both seemed to be content to walk in silence, every now and then stealing glances at the other one. When Addison slipped her hand into Izzie’s, she was surprised but happily accepted, gently squeezing Addison’s in return. Running her thumb over the back of her hand, she was glad she had taken that step and allowed her to figure things out. Maybe it would prove to be the best decision of her life. She definitely had high hopes and just wished she wouldn’t find a way to screw it up.

To her surprise, dinner went quite smoothly. Her nervousness waned quickly and the conversation flowed almost without trying. They even managed to stay completely off of anything remotely work related. By the end, Izzie felt thoroughly relaxed and at ease with the whole idea of dating Addison. Nothing had gone wrong so far and she was really hoping for a second date. If Addison was to ask, she certainly wouldn’t decline.

“So, walk me back home?” Izzie turned to Addison when they left the restaurant, grinning.

Pretending to ponder that question for a moment, she finally replied, “Yeah, I think I can do that.” There was a smirk that followed that answer that made Izzie want to childishly stick her tongue out at her, but thought better of it. Instead, she offered Addison her hand, which seemed to be gladly accepted.

“Any first impressions you want to share?” Addison asked a few minutes into their walk.

“Will that be followed by a whole questionnaire?” Izzie chuckled lightly, amused that Addison wanted to know how she was doing; a question Izzie couldn’t deny she wanted to ask herself.

“Sorry,” Addison muttered, a faint blush creeping up her cheeks. “I just… I guess I wanted to make sure this was what you had in mind.”

“It was much better,” she replied honestly. “My imagination came up with much more horrible scenarios.”

“Ouch,” Addison winced. “I’m not sure how to take that.”

Repeating her words over in her head, Izzie immediately hurried to rectify her words. “Oh no… no, that’s not what I meant,” she made a face. “More like all the things I could do or say to embarrass myself,” she added.

“Oh, well, then, if it’s any consolation, you didn’t,” Addison said softly, pulling Izzie closer to her.

“Yeah, it kinda is,” she smiled at her in response. She was mere inches away from Addison now and the closeness made the butterflies in her stomach go wild. Swallowing hard to calm her nerves, she closed the remaining distance between them and gently pressed her lips against Addison’s.

“Is it safe to assume you wouldn’t mind a second date?” Addison asked with a grin as she pulled away.

Only now, Izzie noticed they were already in front of her house again. “I guess it is,” she nodded. “This time, it’s on me.”

“Deal,” Addison agreed before kissing her again. “So, I’ll see you at work tomorrow?”

“I’m quite certain that can be arranged,” Izzie answered, slowly walking backwards to the door, never breaking eye contact with her.

“Sweet dreams,” she called after her.

Izzie grinned, “Definitely.” The next thing she knew, was her back colliding with the door. A short yelp escaped her, followed by a blush that would put a tomato to shame.

“Goodnight, Izzie,” Addison chuckled, turning to leave.

“Night,” she mumbled, completely mortified trying to unlock the door. Inside, it took her all she had to not bang her head against the wall. “Smooth, really smooth, Izzie,” she scolded herself.
