- Last King of Scotland - not as good as the book but amazingly acted. The story has been somewhat toned down to becoming an interracial love story in a war torn country but it hasn't quite lost all of it's richness.
- The Sea Inside - Javier Bardem is amazing in this film about dignity, love and euthanasia. Well conceived, cinematographically beautiful and storytelling at it's finest.
- Vinyan - Cinematography is great, plot is amazingly thin and descends into Lord of the Flies by the end. I am sure it was trying to have a deeper message about motherhood, survival and not giving up but ended up being more about two actors trying to be sincere and not quite making it. And, btw, Emmanuelle Bearte has grown up funny looking which is odd.
- Mirrors - A rather good little horror thriller in which Keifer Sutherland is haunted by evil things behind mirrors. Some good twists and the ending really isn't one that sits comfortably (at least with me). But the moral appears to be - on the brink of divorce? Get some supernatural haunting action and everything will work out for the best.
- Far From Heaven - an interesting film recreating the presumed mores of the 1950s (through rose-tinted glasses) about homosexuality, respectability and interracial friendships. Very watchable.
- Showgirls - thought I should see this but rather wish I'd saved those hours for watching paint dry. Stereotypical plot points like sleep your way to success and flash your boobs whenever possible make this a boring film and there lacked enough focus on the dancing to make my inner choreographer kick in with praise...
- Alexander - erm, yes, Angelina Jolie manages to be surprisingly scary in this but the sensationalising of the homoerotic relationships really misses the point that this was normal and the rest of the film was rather boring.
- I Can't Think Straight - brilliant and amazing film about taboos, relationships and lesbianism. Seriously fantastic - everyone should watch this!
- The Hurt Locker - good but not worth the hype. Some interesting insights into the nature of the Middle East wars and international intervention but not as groundbreaking or amazing was made out.
