Literature is the expression of the journey and not the destination. Famous works concentrate on the development of a subject or set events that go beyond normal text. This in turn helps us identify a subjects reasoning, contemplation, the choices that one makes and many other aspects. The discussion of literature challenges us to question and reflect an author’s meaning or point of view. In some cases, it helps us ‘walk in a character’s shoes’ and guides us to understand the mind set of said character or events.
For example, the expression, ‘what makes them tick’, can help us better understand the concept. It’s about who they are, how they got there, why they made those choices and how they are affected now. It can even transcend into what happens after or how it reflects on their past. These are a few examples as to how literature challenges us, the reader.
Literature also expands our knowledge base with new thoughts and ideas. It can help lead us to perceive events and people in ways we were ignorant to before. The use of similes and metaphors can provide us with new and tantalizing visions to our senses. It is a way in where our perception can be challenged and forged into a different perspective.
The potential of literature is a vast environment that has no right or wrong answer. The concept of the subject is ever changing. If literature can challenge your own point of view, help develop your own perceived concept and then leading you to reflect, literature has done its job.
