Mary Franson Memorial Scholarship: Why do you want to pursue a career in education? 500 words
When I was in 2nd grade I set up a little makeshift classroom in my garage during summer vacation to play school with all my friends and neighborhood children. I would stand up in front of my friends, my ‘pretend students’, and teach them anything that I knew, using my little chalkboard easel. Now, ten years later I stand in front of a real classroom teaching ‘real’ students. Teaching is all I have ever wanted to do with my life, ever since my first grade teacher made my move to Illinois a great one. It is very cliché but the children are our future and education is the strong cement base to the rest of our children’s lives. The impact that my first grade teacher and the teacher I volunteer with have solidified my passion for teaching. I volunteer with a teacher at Robert Clow Elementary School and because of her hospitality I have been with her for almost two years now. Allowing me to teach and observe the class, I have learned more than I have ever thought I would and every minute I spend in her classroom does not bore me nor does it make me second guess wanting an education major. Quite contrary to that, every second has reinforced and strengthened my strong, long lasting passion for education. I want to be able to influence the lives of students just as my life had been and still is impacted by my teachers. I have been working with elementary kids since the summer into sixth grade, volunteering at two vacation bible schools and continuing to volunteer at both for the next 6 years. I do not stop there though; I take my desire to another level with education. I have found so much joy in education and teaching that I help other people who want to pursue a career in education by participating in Future Educators Association as vice president. For me the club is more than people who enjoy working with children but it is a way that I can share my enthusiasm and hopefully help others realize their passion as well. I want to help all the members experience and have an opportunity to understand what teaching is really all about. Everything that I do relates back to teaching and helping children learn. Teaching is not just lecturing class after class, it is the foundation of the rest of a person’s life. To me education is not something limited to math, science, English and social studies. It is also learning life skills that will be later used in life. Teachers do not just stand up in front of a class and spew out random facts of information, they teach social skills and help promote a person’s way of thinking and being. Education is perhaps not thought of in such a way, but it is the foundation on which humans live.
