We just get the one life, you know. Just one. You can't live someone else's or think it's more important just because it's more dramatic. What happens matters. May be only to us, but it matters.
~Gwen from Ghost Town
Do you ever wonder why some people exaggerate their problems? Honestly stop and think about it. Yeah that's what I'm talking about.
I think people do that because they're trying to rationalize the problem. They feel that if something isn't a big deal, they shouldn't be upset, but in doing so they freak out when they are upset over something small. They feel like it has to be something bad, really bad, for them to have a right to be sad about it.
Honestly, who could blame them.
How many times do others, and ourselves, just shrug off others problems as 'well it could be worst' or 'that's stupid, what's so horrible that you're life is so crappy?'. When someone confesses that they're lonely, most often the reply is 'A lot of people are lonely.' Well duh, lonely people know that there are other lonely people but how does that help them? We undermine others, but at the same time we undermine ourselves when our turn comes. The sad thing is, it's programmed into us at a very young age.
Reflect for a moment. When we're little we are told so many times by peers, parents, and siblings to 'suck it up' or 'quit being a baby'. Don't get me wrong, it's an important thing to know how to deal with problems, and anything in excess is bad. But has anyone actually set us down and said 'You know, it's ok to get upset on the little things sometimes. It all matters.'? Can you imagine how different the world would be if we knew that it was ok every once in a while to get upset?
I think we would be a lot more honest with ourselves. The unfortunate thing is though, that it's not like that. Plus, knowing how things work, people would take advantage of that and get upset over anything, which we all know is not good.
However, I dare you next time someone comes to you with a confession, a worry, a problem, or anything that is bothering them no matter how small (especially if this person doesn't usually get upset) and they're just telling you the straight truth, hear them out. Comfort them. Even if you think it's silly and insignificant, and when they think they are being stupid, tell them what I'm going to tell you:
It's ok. It matters.

matters,

it's ok,
