Yunho took the carrot cake out of the fridge and smiled. Jaejoong was well aware of his midnight eating habits that were often times fuelled by stress and had decided to satisfy that bad habit just this one time. Seeing as he’d been coming home late and leaving early for the past few days now, Jaejoong had purposefully baked him a carrot cake that had a short message on top that had been written with icing. Most of the message was gone now, but Yunho still remembered the message clearly.

As he took the cake carefully out of the fridge, Yunho paused when he saw three pairs of eyes staring at him from the kitchen doorway. He closed the refrigerator door and smiled at his children, who automatically took that as a sign to come in. Yunho set the cake down onto the dinner table, and the children all climbed into their seats.
He set his hands onto his hips and laughed, “Did you all hear me come in? Did I wake you guys up?”
“We were waiting for you to get home papa.” Jaehee, their oldest child, confessed immediately, and Yunho’s grin only widened. “Don’t tell.”
“It’s past your bedtime…” Yunho said slowly as he looked at all his children. The twins, Jaehee and Jongmin looked rather upset that Yunho seemed inclined to send them back to bed, while Hanna just looked sleepy. He walked over to his youngest child and crouched down, meeting her tired eyes.
He smiled at her, “Honey, do you want to go to bed?”
“Cake.” Hanna mumbled as she rubbed at her eyes. “I want cake.”
Yunho laughed at his youngest daughter and rubbed the top of her head. He looked at his two eldest children and focused his attention on Jongmin. “I thought I told you two make sure Hanna didn’t stay up too late?”
“Papa, she didn’t want to go to bed.” Jongmin muttered, obviously displeased with the whole situation. “She just kept talking about cake.”
“Did you all stay up to wait for me and welcome me home, or did you all stay up just because you wanted to eat cake?” Yunho questioned lightly as his eyes swept over all his children. When it was clear that the unvoiced answer was the latter, he shook his head and crossed his arms.
Yunho let out a sigh and left the table to grab four plates, three metal forks, a plastic fork for Hanna, and a knife for the cake. He set down everything on the table and looked at his children. “Why didn’t you guys have cake earlier?”
“Daddy doesn’t want us to have cake without you.” Jaehee answered as she reached over the table to hand out the plates to her siblings. She sat back down on her chair and stared at Yunho, who had begun to slice the cake. “But papa, it’s not even your birthday, so why do you get a special cake?”
“And it’s always in the fridge!” Jongmin chimed in. He looked at Yunho with a pout that was similar to his sister’s and reminiscent of Jaejoong’s own pout. "Papa, you have to share some with us!
“Share papa, share!” Hanna chorused happily, and she was now more awake than she had been earlier. She smiled joyfully and reached out for the cake, “Give me cake!”
Yunho chuckled and placed down thin slices of the carrot cake for his children on their respective plates before he placed down the thickest slice for himself. When he looked up from the cake, he saw that three pairs of eyes were eyeing his slice.
He shook his head and ignored them to place a forkful of cake into his mouth. When he realized that his kids were still staring, Yunho swallowed and asked innocently. “What?”
“Papa, I want more.”
“Me too.”
“More!”
Yunho shook his head, “No. Do you know what time it is? If any of you get more cake, none of you will be able to sleep. Then do you know what’s going to happen if none of you sleep later? You’ll be tired in the morning -“
“But papa…” Jaehee looked at her brother for assistance in the matter of getting more cake, and he quickly spoke up to help her out.
“We’ll be okay papa.” Jongmin said, and Yunho had to fight back the smile of amusement that was tugging at the corners of his lips. “We’re big already. After we eat, we’ll brush our teeth and go back to bed.”
Yunho tapped his fork against his plate. He looked up, and he spied a familiar figure leaning against the doorway. Unable to hide his smile any longer, he smiled at his beautiful husband before he turned his eyes back to his children. They were all looking at him expectantly, completely unaware of Jaejoong’s presence in the room.
“I don’t think that daddy’s going to like it if I give you guys more cake.” Yunho said slowly, and he could see Jaejoong’s lips quirk into a smile. He looked over at all his children, “If he finds out I’ve given you guys cake in the first place, he’s going to get mad and never bake for us ever again.”
“We won’t tell him papa, we promise!” The twins chorused simultaneously, and Yunho then turned his eyes to Hanna, who’d already shoveled a bit of cake into her mouth while they’d been talking.
Yunho inched his face close to his youngest daughter’s face and wiped off the icing from the corner of her lips before he kissed her forehead. “What about you honey? Are you going to tell daddy that I gave you cake?”
“Nope!”
“See papa, look -“
Jaejoong stepped away from the doorway and cleared his throat. Three heads automatically turned around, and Yunho watched in amusement as Jaejoong crossed his arms in front of his chest and looked down at his children.
“What were you all not going to tell me?” Jaejoong asked slowly before he stepped forward and placed his hands on the back of Jaehee’s and Jongmin’s chairs. He glanced down at the plates then looked at his twins. “I thought I said -“
“Daddy please!”
“Please! Please!”
Yunho laughed in his seat, and he ate his slice of cake as he watched his children plead for their rights to have cake. After Jaejoong had quieted the children down, he scowled at Yunho.
“Why did you give them cake?”
“…I love them?” Yunho answered innocently, and his children grinned back at him. He looked up at Jaejoong and chuckled, “Come on sweetheart, I know you don’t mind them eating it now that I’m here. As long as they drink some water and brush their teeth, I’m sure they’ll be fine.”
Jaejoong scowled at his husband then looked at his children, who were all looking at him with hopeful eyes. “Fine, just tonight because papa’s finally home to have it with us. After this, no more eating cake at midnight, okay?”
“Okay!”
As the children began to eat happily, Yunho watched as Jaejoong walked over to him. He immediately stood up from his seat and opened his arms, and Jaejoong quickly closed the distance between them and hugged him tightly. Yunho kissed Jaejoong despite the protests of Jaehee and Jongmin, and when he pulled away, Jaejoong scrunched his nose.
“You taste like cake,” Jaejoong commented as he tried to seem annoyed with his husband. “I already brushed my teeth, now I probably have to brush again because of you.”
Yunho smiled and ran his hand through Jaejoong’s hair, “Well, I still have to brush my teeth and take a shower. You can join me.”
Jaejoong couldn’t help but smile back because of Yunho’s suggestion. “Join you in brushing your teeth, or join you in the shower?” he asked softly, making sure their children couldn’t overhear.
“Both.”
His beautiful husband of five years smiled at him and replied, “Alright then.”
Yunho pulled Jaejoong in for another kiss, once again causing Jongmin and Jaehee to protest. When they parted, he smiled against Jaejoong’s lips, and then pressed a quick kiss to his forehead.
Life had never been sweeter.
