“You really didn’t need to come with me today,” Jaejoong said as he leaned back further into the car seat. He glanced at Yunho, “It’s not that I don’t need your support but didn’t you have a meeting today?”
Yunho kept his eyes on the road ahead and replied, “I wanted to be there with you because you’ve spent so much time with me this past week.”
“It’s not like I have anything to do. I’m unemployed,” Jaejoong said with a laugh before he glanced out the window. He turned his head back to Yunho, “The houses in Sohyun’s neighborhood are really nice, don’t you think?”
“Do you want me to buy us one?”
Jaejoong shook his head in amusement and chuckled, “I don’t think I want to live with you. You snore, and a house is a lifetime commitment. I don’t want to sleep next to someone who snores for the rest of my life.”
Yunho glanced at Jaejoong, “You take up most of the space on the bed.”
“So?”
They both laughed, and Yunho parked the car in front of Sohyun’s house. Just as Jaejoong was about to get out of the car, Yunho reached out to take a hold of his wrist and pulled him back.
Jaejoong glanced at him and raised an eyebrow, “What?”
“If he says anything that I think is wrong, I’m going to defend you no matter what. I don’t care that he’s your father, I’m going to say something,” Yunho said seriously, “I’d do anything for you, and if he -“
A slow smile stretched across Jaejoong’s face, and he smiled at Yunho brightly before he leaned forward to kiss his boyfriend’s lips. He smoothened Yunho’s hair back sweetly and then cupped his cheek, “Don’t worry, okay? I’ll be fine.”
“I worry about you,” Yunho said softly, “I don’t want you to get hurt…”
Jaejoong hugged Yunho and although the hug was awkward because of their positions, he held Yunho tightly anyway. He buried his face into Yunho’s shoulder, “I know, but don’t worry too much. I’ll be okay. I’m a stronger person now, and so are you.”
When he pulled away, Yunho kissed him. They kissed for a few seconds before Yunho parted from him. Jaejoong smiled at his boyfriend reassuringly and reached out to squeeze his hand, “We’ll be okay.”
“I know,” Yunho replied as he turned to Jaejoong and smiled, “I know.”

Jaejoong glanced at Yunho as he watched the other man fidget at the doorstep. He chuckled a bit and rang the doorbell again as they waited for someone to answer the door.
“I wonder if they’ll mind that I brought cake,” Jaejoong mused as he glanced down at the box in his hands. He glanced at Yunho, “What do you think?”
“Your cake’s good,” Yunho replied as he stuck his hands into his pockets, “I don’t think they’ll mind. Besides, it’s almost twelve anyway, so it’s an acceptable hour to have cake by now -“
“What is an acceptable hour to have cake?” Jaejoong questioned with a smile, “Why do I feel like…are you nervous about meeting my father? Yunho, you don’t -“
The door opened, and Jaejoong’s father stood in front of them. Before either Yunho or his father could say anything, Jaejoong lifted up the box of cake, “We brought cake for dessert.”
Jaejoong’s father kept his eyes on Yunho, and Yunho stared back at him. The two men were still silent, and Jaejoong shifted awkwardly. He’d never introduced anyone to his father, and while he hadn’t planned on introducing Yunho to his father so soon, he had decided later on that it was best to introduce Yunho as soon as possible.
He didn’t want Yunho to feel like he was something to be ashamed of, and if his father truly wanted to make amends with him then he would have to learn to accept that Yunho was his boyfriend.
What Jaejoong hadn’t really considered was how difficult it would be to introduce the two men to one another.
The tense and awkward silence lasted for a bit longer before Jaejoong finally mustered the courage to speak up again. He’d never been the kind of person to face issues directly, but he needed to be bolder so that things would move along.
He never wanted to live life in a stagnant manner ever again.
“Dad, this is Yunho,” Jaejoong said as he gestured with his body over to him, “He’s my boyfriend, and we’ve been seeing each other for a while now.”
“How long?”
Jaejoong bit his lip, “More than six months,” he replied before he gestured over to his father, “Yunho, this is my dad.”
The two men studied each other for a bit longer before Mr. Kim reached forward and held his hand out for Yunho to shake. Yunho immediately shook the older man’s hand, and Jaejoong silently let out a sigh of relief.
As soon as they had let go of each other’s hands, Horan came barreling down and immediately latched herself onto her grandfather, with Eunyoung coming to stand shyly beside him so that she could look at Yunho.
“Isn’t Uncle Yunho the best?” Horan questioned, her bright eyes looking up at her grandfather for confirmation, “He’s the awesomest! Don’t you think so grampa?”
There was a brief silence, and just as Jaejoong was about to interrupt so that there wouldn’t be an awkward silence, his father spoke.
“I think he’s a very good man,” Mr. Kim said before he pulled lightly at Horan’s braid and smiled down at her, “I’m sure he takes care of your uncle very well -“
“We saw them kissing on the sofa!” Horan blurted, and Jaejoong blushed deeply before he pushed the cake box into Yunho’s hands and reached out to pull his niece away from his father in embarrassment.
He bowed his head in shame, “It’s nice to see you dad, good morning,” Jaejoong mumbled before he immediately bolted with Horan in his arms so that she wouldn’t say anything more about him and Yunho to his father.

Brunch went by easily enough, and although there were some awkward lulls in conversation, Jaejoong knew it had gone rather well. His father had spoken to Yunho in a polite attempt to get to know him better, asking questions about his career and studies.
Jaejoong was glad to note that his father hadn’t asked anything about Yunho’s family.
As Yunho left to go to the bathroom and the girls went with Sohyun to get ready to go out with their grandfather, Jaejoong was left alone with his father for the first time the entire day.
“So, do you have a job yet?”
Jaejoong stiffened slightly and glanced at his father, “No, I don’t.” He watched the older man carefully, “Why?”
His father sighed carefully and set down the newspaper onto the coffee table. He folded it and as soon as it was properly placed down, he clasped his hands together and faced Jaejoong.
“Do you want one?”
“Dad, I don’t think…” Jaejoong frowned, “I want to get it on my own. We’ve gone through this before with you getting jobs for me, and I just want to live my own life without needing your help all the time.”
“I know, and I understand,” Mr. Kim replied carefully, “I just thought that I would tell you that one of my clients is looking to hire someone at their architecture firm. I just gathered details for your benefit.”
Jaejoong thought for a few moments. He had placed his job searching on the back burner as he helped Yunho out, but now that Yunho was much better than before, he supposed it was time to look for one again. He missed working, and he didn’t like being entirely reliant on Yunho either.
As much as the house husband role was fulfilling, he still wanted to work.
He sighed and stared hard at his father, “You didn’t make any personal calls or anything of that sort, did you?”
“I promise you, I didn’t. All I did was look for details, and nothing else. If you get the job, it will be due to your merit and skills, nothing else,” his father replied, “Trust me.”
Jaejoong was silent for a few seconds before he replied.
“I trust you.”
Although he had only spoken three words, the look on his father’s face softened to something akin to a fond look shared only between a father and his son, and Jaejoong felt himself smile back at his father.
“I’m happy…that you’ve found someone to take care of you,” Mr. Kim said quietly as he reached out to clasp his son’s hand and squeeze it reassuringly, “He seems like a good man.”
Jaejoong felt himself tear up slightly, and he smiled, “He is.”
“That’s good,” the older man murmured, and Jaejoong could appreciate the amount of effort his father was putting into his words.
It’d taken more than twenty years for them to share that kind of moment of understanding and trust, and while their relationship was still flawed, imperfect and far from ideal, he could feel himself look to their future together with an optimistic heart.
After all, no family was ever truly perfect.

“I think my father likes you enough,” Jaejoong mused as he and Yunho walked around the park near their apartment building. He glanced at Yunho and smiled, “He said that you seemed like a good man.”
Yunho was silent for a few seconds before he squeezed Jaejoong’s hand tightly and replied, “I’m happy that both of you seem to be getting along better, and I’m happy that he…”
“That he accepted you?”
Yunho nodded silently, and Jaejoong pulled the taller man into a tight embrace. He rubbed Yunho’s back soothingly and kissed his cheek, “I’m so happy I met you,” he whispered, “You know that I’d do anything for you, right?”
“I know,” Yunho whispered shallowly as he pulled Jaejoong closer for comfort and reassurance, “I love you so much.”
Jaejoong smiled and parted from Yunho slightly so that he could look up at the other man when he replied, “I love you too.”
They kissed in the middle of the walkway for a few minutes, and Jaejoong relished in the warmth that Yunho’s kisses always brought to him. He could feel himself practically brimming with happiness, and when they pulled away from each other to continue their walk around the park; he rested his head against Yunho’s shoulder.
“Hey Yunho, I -“
Something knocked into his leg, and Jaejoong glanced down at the football. Yunho reached down and picked it up just as a little boy ran up to them. Jaejoong observed the boy carefully, taking note of his features. He looked familiar, but he didn’t know where he’d seen the boy before.
“Is this your ball?” Yunho asked as he knelt down so that he was closer to the boy’s height.
The boy nodded, his almond shaped eyes focused on Yunho intently. It was when their faces were only centimeters apart that Jaejoong recognized the boy due to how similar he looked to Yunho.
He was Yoonhee’s son.
When Jaejoong looked up from the boy, he recognized Yoonhee standing a few feet away. She looked uncertain of what to do, and as soon as their eyes met, she looked worried.
“Jaejoong, is something wrong?” Yunho asked, tearing himself away from the conversation that he’d started with Yongha. He looked in the direction that Jaejoong was staring into, and he stiffened when he saw Yoonhee.
Yongha ran over to his mom and quickly pulled her over despite her protesting. He brought her over to them, and he pointed at Yunho, “It’s him!”
Yunho glanced at the boy before he looked up at his sister for an explanation. She faltered under the pressure, and Jaejoong gave her a small smile of encouragement in the hopes that she wouldn’t run away.
“I…framed that picture of us,” Yoonhee whispered, “The one we took after your eighteenth birthday. It’s in my house.” She bowed deeply before she took hold of her son’s hand, “Let’s go Yongha.”
She turned away, and both men watched her go. As soon as she was gone, Jaejoong reached out and touched Yunho’s shoulder in concern.
“Are you okay?”
Yunho was silent, and Jaejoong didn’t press any further. He waited patiently, and after a minute or so, Yunho replied, “I don’t know what to feel anymore. When I saw her, I didn’t…I didn’t know what to feel.”
“It’s better than being angry,” Jaejoong whispered as he held Yunho’s hand and tugged at it so Yunho would face him, “I know…I know you don’t want me to meddle in your affairs, but…”
“But what?”
“I called her one time...and I only have her number because I wanted to help you in some way. I’m sorry for never telling you before,” Jaejoong said softly, his eyes downcast; “I know you may be doubtful about…her intentions, and I know what she did wasn’t right…but I think you should talk to her. There are some things that you should hear from her.”
Jaejoong looked up, worried that Yunho was upset with him. He reached out and ran his hands through his boyfriend’s hair, “Please, don’t be angry with me.”
“I’m not angry,” Yunho said softly, “I…I don’t know. Jaejoong, what did she-“ he stopped himself and glanced in the direction where Yoonhee had gone, “You’re right. I should see her…”
“You don’t have to do it now, you can do it -“
“I want to talk to her.”
Jaejoong looked at him hesitantly, “You don’t have to rush into it Yunho. There’s always time for you to -“
“But…how much time is there really?” Yunho questioned, “I won’t have forever Jaejoong, and…if there are things that I need to know, then I believe that I should know them as soon as I can. I’m not the same person that I was a month ago. I’m a better person not just for you, but for myself as well.”
Jaejoong hugged Yunho tightly, “Take it slow first Yunho. You need to think first. Okay? Don’t rush things.” He rubbed Yunho’s back soothingly, “If ever you need to contact her, just borrow my phone. You don’t need to ask.”
When they began to make their way back home, Jaejoong noticed how deep in thought Yunho was, but he said nothing about it. They went about with the rest of their Saturday in relative peace, and after dinner, Jaejoong was not surprised to see Yunho take his phone off the table and enter their bedroom alone.
He watched the television and waited, distracting himself from what was going on with Yunho. As much as he wanted to rush into the bedroom and be a part of what was going on, he knew that there were some matters that needed to be settled only between family members.
Jaejoong dozed off eventually, and he woke up when Yunho kissed his cheek. His eyes opened, and he noticed immediately that Yunho’s eyes were red.
“What happened -“
Yunho embraced him tightly and breathed in deeply, “I love you,” he whispered lovingly as he pulled Jaejoong closer, “I love you so much. Thank you.”
Jaejoong smiled and held Yunho close, “I love you too, and I’m so proud of you,” he whispered back, “You’re so strong.”
“Only because of you,” Yunho replied as he pulled away to look at Jaejoong, “Without you, I don’t think I ever would have gotten past my anger. I called her, and she explained…but, I don’t think…”
“It’s okay,” Jaejoong murmured as he ran his hand through Yunho’s hair, “Don’t worry about it. You can take it one day at a time.” He smiled encouragingly at Yunho and pulled him into another hug. “I’m so happy for you.”
The happiness he felt for him and Yunho was immeasurable, and he felt like everything was beginning to look up for both of them again.
