February 14, 2003 (Valentine’s Day)
Yunho sat down on the cold floor of the dance studio and began to stretch. He could see the reflection of the chocolate in the mirror, the red boxes piled up in a distant corner of the room. He was more than a little surprised with how many he’d gotten - he wasn’t aware that quite a few of the other trainees thought he was cute.
He smiled to himself and slowly stood up so that he could practice the routine.
They’d been assured of a debut and as leader of the group; he was determined to learn the routine first. It’d only been introduced to them the day itself, but he’d already gotten most of the moves committed to memory.
Just as he was about to begin, he heard a loud clattering of boxes and turned around. Jaejoong bit his lip and smiled apologetically as he stood over the cluttered boxes of chocolate. Yunho laughed and strode over to him, his long legs taking him across the room quickly.
“You should be more careful,” Yunho said as he disposed of some of the chocolate that had fallen out of their boxes. He and Jaejoong sat down on the floor together, and he carefully inspected Jaejoong for any injury.
Jaejoong pulled away, “I’m fine.” He said before he withdrew his arm from Yunho’s grasp. “Why are you still in here?” he asked after he’d put a slight distance between himself and Yunho.
“I’m practicing.”
“It’s so late. You should rest,” Jaejoong scolded. He glanced at the pile of chocolate and took one. “I didn’t expect that you would get so many chocolate.” He said while he artfully unwrapped the red ribbon off a box of chocolate.
“I didn’t expect any to be honest,” Yunho replied as he selected a chocolate from the box that Jaejoong had opened. “You got quite a lot. A lot of the other trainees asked me weeks before about what kind of chocolate you liked.”
“No wonder.” Jaejoong chewed the chocolate thoughtfully and tilted his head, “When we debut, our fans will be the ones sending us chocolate.”
“I guess.” Yunho commented as he took another chocolate. “Once again, you’ll probably be getting the most…or well, I don’t know. I think Junsu and Yoochun will probably be able to get a lot of chocolate as well.”
“What about Changmin?”
“He’d probably finish all of his before we got the opportunity to compare.”
They laughed and continued to eat Yunho’s chocolate. Yunho forgot about the routine he was supposed to be practicing, but Jaejoong did not forget the original reason as to why he was in the dance studio.
After they’d finished the box, Jaejoong shifted and knocked into something behind him.
“What’s that?” Yunho asked, finally noticing that Jaejoong had been hiding something behind him the entire time they were together.
Jaejoong bit his lip, “Well, I told you that I was surprised you got a lot of chocolate…right?”
“Yes, you did.” Yunho said slowly. “What does that have to do with the thing you’re hiding?”
Jaejoong took out the bar of chocolate and held it out to Yunho. “I wanted to give you something. I was supposed to give it to you earlier, but it was hard with so many people around.”
Yunho stared at the chocolate bar for a few minutes before he reached out for it, his long fingers brushing against Jaejoong’s smooth hand. “I don’t have anything for you.” He said softly as he held onto the chocolate and Jaejoong’s hand. “You really didn’t have to get me anything.”
“I just…” Jaejoong stared nervously at Yunho and shrugged, “I thought it would be a good idea. You can think of it as congratulations as well - I’m sure you’re going to be a great leader.”
Yunho smiled at Jaejoong, “Thanks.” He took the bar of chocolate and set it down on the floor before he launched himself at Jaejoong, wrapping his arms around the older teen tightly. “I’ll make sure to be a good leader and take care of you Jaejoongie.”
Jaejoong wrapped his arms around Yunho tightly, “You should get off me then, so I can breathe. If you remain on top of me for any longer, I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to our debut.”
Yunho laughed and got up quickly before he outstretched his hand, “I’ll help you up.” Jaejoong gripped onto Yunho’s hand tightly and let Yunho pull him up. He watched as Yunho collected his chocolates and then they made their way out of the room.
As they made their way out of the building, Yunho ripped open the plastic wrap of the bar of chocolate and began to eat it.
“Aren’t you sick of chocolate?” Jaejoong asked as he scrunched his face in distaste at the idea of eating any more. “I feel like I’m going to get diabetes tomorrow.”
Yunho shrugged and continued to eat the bar of chocolate. “You gave it to me. It’s better for you to know that I ate it. It shows how much I appreciate the effort you made.”
Jaejoong blushed and fell silent. Yunho could only smile in response, his heart fluttering wildly in his chest as he savored the sweet taste of chocolate and the simple pleasure of just being next to Jaejoong.
March 14, 2003 (White Day)
Jaejoong stirred his cup noodles idly as he rested his face on his palm. He stared at the steaming contents and sighed before he shut his eyes. He didn’t bother to open them as he heard someone come over and occupy the seat across him.
“Are you feeling okay?”
The warmth of a familiar touch against his forehead made Jaejoong open his eyes in surprise, only to be greeted by the sight of Yunho’s warm smile. He quirked the corners of his mouth up in an attempt to look better than he felt but he knew that he wouldn’t be able to fool Yunho.
“You should eat this.” Yunho said slowly as he pushed the cup noodles closer to Jaejoong with his hand. “You shouldn’t have an empty stomach. It’s important for you to eat something so you’ll feel a little better.”
Jaejoong picked up his chopsticks and rubbed them between his palms as he studied Yunho’s face. “What are you doing here? He asked, “I thought you were going to be gone until tomorrow.”
“Oh, well…” Yunho trailed off. “I was told that I should help Changmin with the choreography. I can go back to Gwangju another time.” He replied before placing a smile back onto his face. “Do you know what time it is?”
Jaejoong glanced at his watch. “Quarter to nine. Why?”
“I just…” Yunho laughed and only confused Jaejoong further. He apologized quickly but laughed again. He covered his face with his hands and Jaejoong could only watch him confusion before he began to eat his noodles instead of just waiting for Yunho unproductively.
Two minutes later, Yunho recovered. A faint pink blush covered his cheeks and he placed his bag on the table.
“I feel kind of stupid for doing this.” He said slowly and honestly as he opened his bag and rummaged through it. “You might not even care or…” he added, his voice quieter and less sure as he began to pull something out of his bag.
Jaejoong set his chopsticks down and watched carefully, “What is it?” he asked as he tried to remain as cool as possible, but despite his cool tone of voice, it was obvious that he was curious.
His heart raced in his chest, each beat seeming impossibly quicker than the previous one as he waited for Yunho to reveal the item from his bag.
His breath caught in his throat the moment Yunho pulled the chocolate bar from his bag and slowly pushed it across the table with shaking hands. He watched Yunho’s hand and the moment it stopped halfway, Jaejoong raised his eyes off the table and stared at Yunho.
“Is that for me?” he asked softly, hoping his voice would not betray the nervousness that was overflowing within him.
Yunho nodded. “You gave me chocolate on Valentine’s day…” he trailed off and looked away briefly before he turned his attention back to Jaejoong. “I thought it’d only be right if I gave you something back.”
Jaejoong’s voice was barely above a whisper, “You didn’t have to.” He said as he tried to formulate the words to follow. “It was just a gift.”
The chocolate bar was edged closer to Jaejoong. “Then think of this as a gift as well. It’s a gift from me.” Yunho added as he nudged the bar against Jaejoong’s fingertips repeatedly. “I’ll be hurt if you don’t accept it.”
Jaejoong laughed and immediately withdrew his hand from the table as he impulsively covered his face with his hand. Yunho took the bar off the table and handed it to Jaejoong, holding it up mid-air.
Jaejoong took it, his fingertips lightly grazing the skin of Yunho’s hand, sending chills down his spine. He set it back down on the table so he could continue eating his noodles. “Thank you.” He said as soon as he realized he’d forgotten to thank Yunho. He could feel a blush come to his cheeks and he stared down at his noodles.
“Are you okay?” Yunho asked worriedly, “You don’t look so -“
Jaejoong looked back at him and shook his head. “I’m fine, really.” He pushed aside the unfinished noodles and ripped open the bar of chocolate. “I just don’t feel like eating the noodles anymore.”
“You shouldn’t be eating the chocolate if you’re not feeling well.” Yunho commented with a frown as Jaejoong broke off a piece. “I don’t want to be the cause of you getting even sicker.”
He ignored Yunho and placed the piece of chocolate in his mouth. Jaejoong savored the sweetness on his tongue and smiled at Yunho, “It’s good.”
“You have to drink water afterwards.”
“I’ll make sure to do so.”
Yunho got up from the table and filled a glass with water before he came back and placed it down in front of Jaejoong. “I’ll make sure you drink after you’re done with the chocolate.”
“Is it weird…?” Jaejoong bit his lip, “Is it weird that we gave each other chocolate?”
“I don’t think it is.” Yunho reached over and brushed his thumb on Jaejoong’s face as he wiped a bit of chocolate off. “What time is it?”
Jaejoong could barely understand the figures on his watch due to the butterflies in his stomach, but he shook his head and calmed himself down. “Ten minutes after nine.”
Yunho stood up, “I have to go.” He smiled at Jaejoong, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye Yunho.”
Another brilliant smile later then Yunho was gone, yet the butterflies in his stomach lingered with each bite of chocolate, reminding him of Yunho with every burst of sweetness.
