the survey:

My favorite stories this year: Emergence, dumber than the dirt on the ground, We Are Nowhere and It's Now, and No Clear Light.

My best story this year: Season Best, the great compromise, and mapless and hopeless, alone together.

Most popular story: some boyhood bravery, which I will never understand, because it's a pretty minor pairing.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: we are the opposite of diamonds in the rough. I thought I used a really interesting (if slightly overwrought) metaphor there.

Most fun story: cloths of heaven.

Sexiest story: I think Meaning of it All has a kind of quiet, domestic sexiness that I really like.

Story with single sexiest moment: "Nate's head jerks almost imperceptibly, a nod, and he raises it, breathing harshly as Brad goes from one finger to two and then three. "Shit," he chokes. Without seeing Nate's face, it's still a little hard for Brad to tell if he's using too much pressure. But then he urges keep going, though Brad crooks his fingers more, just to be sure." (from One For You, One For Me)

Story with single sweetest moment: The foot massage in a hovering like grace.

Hardest story to write: all that you swallowed before grace.

Easiest story to write: Emergence, despite its length and detail-I came up with the idea during a writing break and plotted it so I could write it all in January. It kind of pushed itself out.

"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: Learn From Your Mistakes or Make Them Over Again is original fiction starring me and two of my friends. They don't know about it. I consider that questionable.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I'm not sure I really had one this year. Maybe Eventually We Find Our Way?

Biggest disappointment: That when I go back and reread things, they feel really over-researched. And again, when I write a fic specifically for someone and they don't acknowledge it.

Biggest surprise: Not being able to finish my fic for warbigbang.

Most telling story: No Clear Light.

Favorite opening line: "The one time Alex deems them worthy of his presence outside of set, it's a disaster of epic proportions. PJ bets that Alex can't drink a flaming shot and at least six regular shots, which Stark knows is a terrible idea." (from money to burn, time to kill)

Favorite closing line: "They fuck without worrying about anything. And he'll tell Nate about the dreams when they get to where they're going." (from mapless and hopeless, alone together)

Favorite line from anywhere: "It's their first fight. It's the middle of the day, and they're standing in the Quad, more than a few handfuls of people scattered by the trees. People are watching them argue, and even Mark realizes that this is a moment so painfully intimate and raw it should only happen back at Mark's room, with the door locked and their voices as muffled as possible." (from let my shoes lead me forward)

Favorite title: Nothing Here Will Bloom or Rise.

Looking back, did you write more stories than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted? Fewer.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you never would have predicted in January 2011? Black Swan.

Story that could have been better? Eventually We Find Our Way. Something about it just left me unsatisfied with the finished product.

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most: Sleep always seems to be a recurring symbol, but if I had to pick a theme: take your risks while you can.

Story I want remembered: I don't think I love a specific piece enough to say.

What's next for 2012: Not a lot, unfortunately. Maybe some short original pieces or poetry, and a mix on occasion, but college is leaving with me with less time than I imagined.
