A few weeks ago, Val was watching her Batman: The Animated Series box sets. As I sat down and watched this cartoon for the first time since it came out, I marveled at the beauty of the artwork and animation - all of which was done by hand. B:TAS is probably the last major animated cartoon I can recall being animated by hand. I waxed poetic about the beauty of painted backgrounds - from the gothic Art Deco of B:TAS to the classical still lifes of the old, old, OLD Tom & Jerry cartoons (the MGM years).

I'm glad she remembered the conversation and showed me this. Handpainted animation is a dying art form - and there's nothing wrong with modern techniques of animation - but it's nice to see a few people cherishing and practicing the old methods for the sheer love and beauty of the experience.
