yes, i'm seeing it in chicago, and the aunt who got us tickets was originally going to get it just for me and one of my sisters, but then my uncle convinced her to let all of us go. i've already seen a bootleg of the show but it'll be so incredible to see it live, and i promise to tell you everything! (did i mention that i saw Fun Home back in november? it was a beautiful memory play with kate shindle, aka the mad hatter, as the oldest Alison Bechdel)
the main gender book i read is called Gender Failure, based on a show the two nonbinary authors worked on together. the one i connected with the most is Ivan Coyote who's just an incredible storyteller, and i get sucked into video watching marathons quite frequently. actually, i pointed to a picture of Ivan in the book when i went to get my haircut. the other writer is rae spoon, who identified as a trans man for about ten years, and then changed to "gender retirement" and now uses they pronouns.
"stories that are sort of about finding a story, and connecting with the past" hmmmm, why am i not surprised that the person i introduced to midnight's children, and who loves r&gad, is into this kind of story? but yes, that's exactly what we both love! i was a little conflicted about this particular book, because the grandmother had an *incredible* life with a lot of pain but also a lot of joy, and the actual pages of her writing are evocative, but then the granddaughter who brought it all together had a writing style that fell flat with me somehow. i'm sure she felt all the things she wrote about while reading the journal decades later, but she wasn't that effective at making me feel those things, if that makes sense.
i just started my 66th journal over the weekend, silkscreened with images of chicago landmarks, and clouds that are a map of the world.
