Chapter 453: Offer
*Toby and Phoebe enter “The Sweet Shoppe”*
Taryn: Hi, Toby! What are you doing here?
Toby: Just dropping off a few things in the kitchen.
Taryn: Oh, that’s great. Thanks! And who is this?
Toby: Oh, this is Phoebe…my sister.
Taryn: Nice to meet you, Phoebe. I’m Taryn.
Phoebe: Hi.
Toby: Taryn’s my boss.
Toby: Well, I’m just going to take this stuff to the back. Take a look around Phoebe.
Phoebe: Okay.
Taryn: Want a cookie? Toby made them this morning.
Phoebe: Sure, how much is it?
Taryn: Pfft, it's free. I'm not going to make my baker's sister pay for something he made.
Phoebe: *smiles* Thanks.
Taryn: So, how old are you, Phoebe?
Phoebe: Twelve.
Toby: I think Toby had mentioned you before…you live with him, right?
Phoebe: Yeah.
*Toby reenters*
Toby: All done. I knew it would be quick. See anything you like, Phoebe?
Phoebe: Sure, it’s a cute store. I’ll have to come back when I have some spending money.
Taryn: Oh…
Taryn: That gives me an idea…Phoebe, I could use some extra help around the store. Would you be interested?
Phoebe: I’m a little young to have a job.
Taryn: It would only be one day a week for a few hours. See, I get new inventory on Wednesdays and I could use an extra set of hands organizing it.
Taryn: I mean, you wouldn’t make a ton of money or anything, but you’d have a little extra cash…and an employee discount in the store.
Phoebe: I don’t know… *she glances at Toby*
Toby: Phoebe is very responsible. I think it’s a great idea.
Phoebe: There’s no way mom and dad would let me get a job.
Toby: Mom and dad made me your guardian; I get to decide that now.
Phoebe: But-
Toby: They aren’t here and I think it would be fun for you. I trust Taryn completely. Unless you don’t want to…
Phoebe: But I do!
Toby: Then it’s settled.
Taryn: Great! Next Wednesday can be your first day, just come in after school and I’ll show you what to do.
*Phoebe smiles*
Toby: Thanks, Taryn. See you tomorrow morning.
Taryn: Bright and early.
*Toby and Phoebe are walking home*
Phoebe: Um…Toby?
Toby: Yes?
Phoebe: Thanks…the job does sound fun. Mom and dad would have never thought I could do it…it’s nice that you think I can.
Toby: I know you can. And you’re welcome.

So, Toby is getting more help with his attempts to connect with his much younger sister. Taryn really had no idea that when she offered Phoebe a small job at the store that it might give Toby a chance to show he believes in her. Anyway, there is more work to be done, but it's a start. ;)
