How soon is now?existence_ltdNovember 17 2005, 04:27:55 UTC
Way-ell, you may recall I mentioned an idea I had for a story a while back. Perhaps it would work here (I forgot about it til I saw this post). Here goes:
Our main character is a regular service robot like in any other household. He dusts and vacuums and cooks and is a playmate for the little girl and deals cards for the family. He has a digital music uplink and the parents, middle-aged, about the same age as you and me (some years in the future) like to listen to the 80s/90s music station.
At some point, something happens (I don't know what yet) that gives him perhaps self-awareness or emotions to his AI. However, he can only speak in song lyrics. With these new emotions (cliche maybe but fuckit) he soon falls in love with the young girl (only child of the parents). As the people catch on, they begin to distrust and be creeped out by him and eventually trade him out for a more recent model.
Over the following years, he drops by now and then to check on the daughter. As she grows up and bot gets more outdated, her feelings turn from happy to see it to irritated by it and eventually to detest it (maybe?). Eventually it's time for bot to be scrapped.
His last words are "I am human and I need to be loved... Just like everybody else does...", then the crusher crushes him, fade to black.
Not fleshed out, yeah, but you get the basic idea... might be fun to work with. Details are totally subject to changing and fleshing out of course. Perhaps a little bit dark, but bittersweet... Whaddya think?
