Working on an early 18th century sailing ship?

If a person were to be working on a sailing ship around 1710-1720, what tools would they use to do their work? Specifically, doing such things as polishing metal (brass?) equipment and cleaning out cannons or flintlock pistols? Would the former have simply been washed with water, and the latter cleaned with rough brushes?
