Obedience in Slavery
Does anyone know if it was common for a slave owner/overseer (in such situations as the American South before the civil war) to order a slave to do something such kill a fellow slave to prove their obedience, and if so, how the slaves reacted?
Suggestions for keywords that don't turn up BDSM sites would be helpful as well.

EDIT: There have been experiments done to see if normal people would inflict pain on another person if an authority figure ordered them to. http://www.ulmus.net/ace/library/obedience.cfm. The majority of the subjects kept administering higher shocks despite the (faked) pain of those being shocked. I'm trying to find out how this phenomenon relates to that of more forced obedience, i.e. slavery.
As for slaves being valuble, well, lynchings were pretty common, but how about one slave being ordered to whip another?
