I agree - definitely a stick not a cane if you don't want people to assume he's blind or auditioning for Cabaret! And quite likely elbow crutches as they can make it easier to move fast, whereas a stick doesn't really. Though you can get folding sticks in funky patterns since about 2007, which can be stowed away in a backpack or handbag, so your teenager might go either way.

And agreed that damage to a hip/the pelvis/spine is more likely to be the kind of injury you want and can be vaguely handwaved. The NHS would have provided excellent emergency care and probably good follow-up physio etc, but it's plausible a teenager might not have been that co-operative!

If you mean an ordinary pedal bicycle (sometimes called a push-bike to distinguish from a motorbike), then no it's not a legal requirement to wear a helmet, though the kid's parents might make them. Many people don't (partly because research shows cars are less careful round you if you do!)
If they're on a moped (from age 16) or motorbike (from 17 but more likely 18), then a helmet is required and it's not a law people flout.
