Occurrence of Vanishing Twin Syndrome in Identical Twins

Aug 06, 2015 16:30

I'm building a world where mages are usually born as identical twins. I'm trying to determine the percentage who don't have a twin, and even though I could probably get away with a random number and "because magic" as an explanation, I'd rather have it have a cause in Vanishing Twin Syndrome.

For those who don't know, Vanishing Twin Syndrome is when there are originally multiple fetuses in the womb, but one or more are absorbed back into the mother's body. From my research, I know it happens more frequently in fraternal than in identical twins, and I know that in general it occurs in 21-30% of multifetal gestations, but I haven't been able to find how frequently it occurs specifically in identical twins.

Can anyone help me with this?
