I read a retelling of the Robin Hood story children's novel that was aiming for realism (and was hence a lot bleaker than the original story). I remember that their life was really quite uncomfortable, and they were associated with a nearby village in some way to even ensure survival.

I love stories that aim for realism. Can you tell me what the novel was called by chance?

I can, but I fear you'll need to be able to read German. It's Robin Hood. Solang es Unrecht gibt by Tilman Röhrig.
