Night shift at a coffee shop

Setting:My character is working a late night shift at a coffee shop open around the clock, in an urban fantasy setting most comparable to present-day central Europe (though US or Canada info would also be extremely helpful). Yes, I've heard of several cases like that... I've never never been certain whether the "theft" was really the problem or whether the manager in question was just looking for a convenient excuse, but either way it's really sad.

Thank you for the info! I wasn't aware there had been tax issues with Tafel donations. Good to know that's no longer the case.

The concern could be that employees might, for example, deliberately drop something so that it will be something to throw away, if they want to eat it. Or something like that.

Still kinda stupid, but not *entirely* irrational.

I've heard tombolas being used as a way to make things fair when not all employees have contact with clients and partners, and so only some receive presents for the work everyone does collectively.

But to have the bosses take their pick of everything before it is entered into the tombola? Wow. That's like restaurant owners taking their servers' tips.

YIKES. Da wiehert der Amtsschimmel. ;-) Typically absurd attemnpt to apply existing regulations when a situation arises that nobody anticipated when making said regulations... glad that it got cleared up!
